HIGH Voltage Problem

I have a high voltage problem in my camaro. At idle its fine right around 14 volts, but when I rev it up the volts shot right over 18. I have replaced the alternator thinking it might be the voltage regulator, but that had no effect. I had a regular maintenance required battery and it use to get so over charged that it would stem. I now have a maintenance-free battery and I'm worried that I might destroy that one too if I don't get this problem fixed.

I'm open for any suggestions.

have you used a handheld volyage tester? I have seen dashboard guages do the same thing. You should get an engine libht because the ECM will throw a code if it sees voltage over 17.5 or so for more than somthing like 20 seconds. Hope it works.

ha ha! I'm a dummy.... I didnt read all of your post. I didnt see that you already blew a battery. You might take that altenator back to where you got it and see if they can test it for you. If it works there, put it back in and try it again.

BEST OF LUCK!!

I think I solved the problem. Just on a hunch, I decided to clean the engine’s ground cable. It wasn't that dirty, but I cleaned it anyway. I also moved the ground cable so that it directly touches the alternator. Now the highest amount of voltage I can get is 16 volts. Is 16 volts still to high?

Seems like it might be borderline. You might want to keep a close eye on it tho. About 14.5 is about the most you need to see out of it. 15 is prolly max in my book. Turn all your lights, AC, wipers, heater fan should come on when the AC is on, and see what it is doing. (voltage wise)

IMHO...I think 16 is still a little too high.

Highest target voltage setpoint for internal GM regulators is 14.9 volts.
