Alternator ???

Will an alternator from a 88 formula work in an 83? Or will it over load the system or not bolt up right?

You would have to change the driven sheave from the poly-V belt type to a single 37° V belt type. You may also have to clock the rear case differently to allow bolting to the brackets. Electrically, it should work just fine.
