ALDL Data serial Wire question?
ALDL Data serial Wire question?
I can't get my AKM data cable to hook up on a mates car. We have the same ECM. My car hooks up right away yet my mates car does not get a connection.
I believe it is a problem with the SERIAL DATA WIRE from the ECM. Either it is broken or in the wrong pin-out on the ECM.
Can I run a new wire direct from Pin BA8 of the ECM to the E port on the ALDL? Will this work, or is there more circuitry along the way.
Looking at the picture below, you can see that the ORANGE wire goes from BA8 and passes I/P then to the ALDL.
Does anyone know what this I/P stands for and what it is or what it does? This would mean I cannot run a new fed wire directly if it has some purpose.

Hello IrocInOz,
Long time no hear from you mate. First off, what year and model is your mate's car? Secondly, I/P stands for instrument panel.
Cheers!!!!!!!!!!

Cheers!!!!!!!!!! Yeah Trickster, been reading a bit on the forums not as much posting.
His year is a 1990 5.7 TPI. SO what you are saying is that it goes from the ECM to the Insrument panel then to the ALDL?
When we short out A and B we get code 12 so all that looks fine. But can't get no data feed from the wire. He has a wire in the M port of the ALDL the E is empty.
Yesterday he wrote to me saying he has been looking at the wiring and has found that a GREEN wire has been spliced into the ORANGE wire soldered together and runs somwhere he can't see. Maybe it goes to the instrument panel??
But we think maybe this is the problem, with this added wire. Who knows what has been done with these cars once they get converted to RHD from LHD.
But it looks like something is corrupting the data as the cable will not make a connection. we can eliminate the cable it works perfectly on all others cars I have tried.
We are thinking of wiring in new wire and connecting it to port E or the ALDL as it is free.
Do you have any suggestions Trickster?

The orange wire that goes to pin "M" is a spliced wire from pin "E" and goes to the same connector on the ECM. No clue about the green wire that you have mentioned unless someone goofed thinking that it was a power wire for something.. I will check my schematics and see what I can find.
The ALDL is considered to be part of the instrument panel. Not per se because of the instruments but because the whole front console is called the instrument panel.

Yeah that is what I figured. Only M has a wire in it not E. I think we might try and cut this green wire and see if the data cable makes a connection.
I think someone in fact has butchered this wire and maybe run some kind of feed off it. Not sure what is on the wire if 12v or what.
Thanks for your help. I really wanted to know if the wire goes direct from ECM to ALDL which it does so all is call. The I/P had me guessing what it is but now I know.
Thanks again

Just some more information on this. He used a multimiter and it shows 4.9volts across A and M on the ALDL. I have yet to check mine to compare but if anyone knows let me know if this is right.
I will be able to get to the car in 2 days to try it out and see if in fact it should be 4.9volts.
