Removing Unwanted Wires
Removing Unwanted Wires
Well fellas this is the deal. Ive completely stripped my camaro since i plan on having it only as a track car. Pulled everything including the dash. Now behind the dash are tons of wires that id really not like to have there. Got rid of all the radio junk already but theres still a lot. After doing some searching i figure its pretty safe to get rid of the computer. 1989 Camaro RS btw. Since my motor is carbed, non computer controlled distributor, holley red external fuel pump i turn on with a switch. So from reading up it doesnt look like the computer did anything for me even when i had my last motor in there (same type of carbed set up). However there are two other boxes with mass amounts of wires in them. The VATs box, and some black box that said AC on it. Now the black box that said AC on it had wires that looked like they went to the clutch (neutral safety switch?) and one that went to the brake pedal (brake lights?) and some other non important stuff
. I pretty much took that out already but saved it just incase. So by taking it out i know (if it infact was the neutral safety switch) that if i turn the car over in gear it will jump. However i do NOT know if the car will turn over at all. Will this affect anything? Also with the VATs box, if i take that out im guessing i wont be able to turn my engine over, not worried about it not sending my Fuel Pump a signal since thats aleady by passed. However will i have problems if i take the VATs box out and if so how can i rig around that. Thanks fellas did some searchs already but need some help. In a nut shell
Computer - Take it out will i have any problems with my motor (only thing i care about) since it is carbed/non computer controlled distributor/non computer controlled fuel pump.
Black A/C Box (was behind the dash) - Took out already, looked like it had neutral safety switch connected to it. What are the effects?
VATs Box - What are the effects if i take it out, and if it means engine will not crank how can i by pass that cuz i want the least amount of wires possible.
Sorry this was so long, appreciate it fellas.

The vats controls a few things, most of them are already gone in your case though. The only thing it would still control is the starter relay in the fender. I just wired the relay through a toggle switch to ground instead of the vats box. This way the car won't turn over if your switch isn't activated. The relay is located in the fender behind the hood handle. It's usually tarred over to keep it from rattling/ hide it.

I'd post images I took to explain this better, but i suck at posting pics.
I looked at my car, and there is a relay in the driver side kick panel hidden by tar.
Two yellow wires and two green wires lead to it(one skinny one fat green)
If I remember correctly, the vats system simply ran the smaller of the two green wires to ground. This would throw the relay, and enable the starter.
I ran the smaller green wire through a toggle switch then directly to ground. With the toggle off, car won't turn over. With the toggle on, The car will turn over normally with the key.
The rest of the vats controlled components would be eliminated if you eliminate the computer.
I'll have to check about the fuel pump, I forget if it's vats controlled or not, I went to mechanical so it didn't matter.
