Recently purchased a 1989 iroc. The car starts sometimes hot or cold starts. Starter is new and has enough power for operation all connections are good. After researching this subject on this site i went out and checked my car for the possibly problems, Vats, Relays, Cut wires. While doing so i noticed the steering column was out of a 1984 camaro the car is an 89 my key has no chip in it yet the car starts 1/2 the time. Any advise would be appreciated or any wireing diagrams for the relating to my this problem.

 

Look below the dash for a connector with a black/white wire and a purple/yellow wire and see if someone has put a resistor(s) in it to bypass VATS. You could find it to be like mine where they just took a extra VATS lock cylinder and connected it and then crammed it under the dash above the fuse block.
