Anti-Theft devices
Now that I am finally out of school and will be dumping ridiculous amounts of money into my car, I want to have decent security.
I want to know
What types of alarms are good and the cool things they do?
What types of other devices could be used to prevent tragedy?
Thanks

if you really want to protect your car, get a 2-way viper alarm, with the cellular/gps unit... it lets you track it via the internet, or call into it and control certain features and check on status... in case you are far away...
typical things you can do with a good alarm..
open hatch via remote
open/close windows
pop open shaved doors
turn on headlights, radio, pretty much anything you want
start car
you can expect a good alarm to also have a starter kill relay, which means it cannot be started by hotwiring the car.
my viper alarm has the following accessories available, that I know of.
- Voice module, that works as a PA if I want
- Radar sensor, so people cannot reach in my t-tops
- vibration sensor
- tilt sensor
- trailer disconnect sensor
- interior sirens called "pain generators"
- glowing LED 'stickers' that glow with the alarm being armed
- glass breakage sensor
- and automated window system... I'm putting this in soon... gives you "one touch" operation, plus you can roll up/down the windows via alarm remote... or via arm/disarm.
I strongly recommend the 790xv or the new one the 791xv...
you're looking at over $500 installed, but it's worth it
make sure you discuss where certain things will go... like hood trigger, hatch trigger, valet switch, and alarm LED...
they can do some dumb stuff sometimes, just discuss it first...

yeah man get the alarm installed locally, and you can install all the accessories yourself... save a bundle...
I just didn't trust myself at the time to install remote start and all that junk...
as soon as I find the wiring diagram for the window switches, I'll have the automatic windows in... $50 of ebay...
my next step is the radar motion sensor, so I can finally use my (cop) radar detector with my t-tops off... I am usually too afraid it will get stolen, even though I am near my car at all times..
--- in a different car I owned, I was delivering pizza for a local pizza place, and I was asked to work late... so anyways we were busy as hell, in and out, in and out, you get the idea. Anyways apparently someone was watching all the drivers to find a window of oppurtunity... they came up to the back entrance and blocked the back door with a wooden palette, and smashed my window and took my radar detector. (I had it for 5 days.)
what's worse is I was supposed to get off work an hour before that, but the "managerette on duty," told me I needed to stay and help the other drivers out...
I told corporate about the situation and they wouldn't do crap about it... it was totally that dumb b--... well, it was her fault for making me stay, when I didn't have to.
/anger released.
ever since then, I've had an alarm. no break-ins, and much more expensive stuff for people to steal.

besides a good alarm system, something i highly recommend is a steadfast collar for the steering column.
most people looking to steal a car know what they are & will move on to something easier.
once installed its purely passive. but, once installed it is a pain to repair the column if something goes bad.
if you get 1, i recommend replacing the wiper switch, lock cylinder, bearings, & put some blue loctite on the 4 bolts that always come loose.

honestly, I wouldn't worry too much about the actual car getting stolen... just the goods on the inside
on that note, however... on my alarm, the second I pull the key out of run mode, the starter kill relay engages... (meaning you CANNOT hotwire the car from the ignition or under the dash... unless you find the starter kill wire from the alarm
also, if someone kills the power to the alarm, the relay stays engaged via solid-state technology.
