starter problems with headers

The headers on camaros run right by the starter and burns it up quickly. I have wraped the header and the starter, and have a CSR mini starter to help reduce the heat. In the summer the starter overheats and will not start untill it cools off. The problem gets worse and worse untill the starter finally dies. It seems like I will be going through a starter every year. Dose anyone else have this problem and are there any solutions. Dose anyone know of a starter that can handle the heat.

Long tube or short tube headers? My shorties come right next to the starter and haven't had a problem yet.

they are the short style headers. This problem only happens durring the summer, and I live in south Texas. I think that the hot air does not allow the starter to cool off as well.

On other vehicles with SBC's and headers that run close to the starter, changing to one of the "mini" starters from newer vehicles or aftermarket usually helps solve the problem.

I *suspect* that wrapping the starter is not a good idea. If it's dying from heat soak, (which is typical) then no matter what barrier is in place, will be penetrated eventually. Now that the starter is *insulated* the heat is going to be contained within it. At least thats my theory.

I can see a metal shield perhaps working somewhat. (GM did that in certain applications)

I remember reading an article about starter heat soak in a magazine, where they changed everything in the starting system (battery cables, solenoid add/change) and the only one that completely solved the problem was one of the mini starters.

I have enough room between my headers and starter to put a head shield (be it fabric or a sheet of metal). If its ever and issue that'll be the first thing I'd do.
