oil pressure sending unit

I have the crazy pressure gauge thing going on, and from reading post here it sounds like the sending unit is gone. One thing I am a little confused on is it seems there are two different setups. One has the unit by the distributor, while the other has the unit by the oil filter. Which one would I have? Does it depend on year, engine, etc.?

Also, is this the part that I will need?

On some of the earlier models this was true, however on your car the oil pressure switch/sending unit is located down by the oil filter.

the problem is that it is very inconsistant. Sometimes it'll be pegged, other times it'll read almost zero, and then sometimes it just jumps around. A lot of times it will be maxed and as I accelerate and the rpm's increase it it'll start to come down until I shift and it spikes again.

Thanks Trickster, just wanted to make sure I was looking in the right place.

i have a 92 rs and mine is at the filter...go to autozone.com and look up the part.then you can click on vehicle specific location and it will tell you where to look for it and show you a pic...or go to any parts store and they should be able to do the same.

No... you will actually need a circus midget to get into the space to get to the sender (j/k of course)

The gauge sender you have is indeed located just above the oil filter. This is also combined with your oil pressure switch (the harness plug will have 3 wires).
Years prior to 90 or 89 (I forget offhand) had the oil press sender located next to the distributor.

Any 'flakey' readings can usually be associated with the sender. If after replacing the sender, you still have the problem, you have something else going on. Which would be.. bad wiring or, your motor is about to go titanic..

Kidding again.... just replace the sender and almost 98% gaurenteed all will be good again.

The common problem with the sender is high pressure on start and slow decline to '0' oil presure. Both styles appear to do this after going bad.

Also keep in mind.. oil pressure is not constant. It's relative to engine speed, temp and oil used.

Just me opinoin though....
