Lamp driver
Hi all,
Do all cars use a lamp driver? On my '82 it seems connected between the ALDL connector and the SES light. Is it used on later year TPI cars? If someone has a wiring diagram of the relevant section of the manual they could post I'd appreciate it.

It is called a light driver module and it is found in carburated vehicles up through 1987. I have found no sign of it being in any TPI vehicle so far.

The lamp driver was removed from my 82 bird when I installed the 350TPI motor. The TPI ECM drives the SES lamp directly.

That's awesome, thanks for that info guys. That's one less problem for me to worry about.
How come GM removed the SES line on the ALDL connector? According to a wiring diagram I saw for '89, it's not there anymore.

Not sure what you mean by the SES line on the ALDL being removed. It is still in the same spot it has always been. The SES light runs to the ECM, not the ALDL.

No, you weren't reading your schematic entirely wrong. Pin "D" of the ALDL for your car was for the light driver module. As mentioned in an earlier post, the light driver module was only used on cars with carburated engines from 1982 to 1987. Since the light driver module was not used on non-carburated engines such as the TPI & TBI, there was no further need for a terminal for it on the ALDL. I hope this answers your question.
