Ok so my ecm was laying on the floor of my bird. " please dont ask" and it rained and before the windows could be rolled up it got thorouhly drenched.
I didnt know this right away so i started the car later that night. The car started but it started sputtering and smoking from the tail pipe. I shut the car down to find out what was wrong looked at the ecm and Water was all over it and in it. all over the circiuit bord and the chip. I opened it up toweled it off and hit it with the heat gun. got it all dried off put it back in and it started up fine no sputtering but. Now it pukes fuel out the tail pipe like its in open loop. It runs descent but smells bad and pukes fuel.
Now I know somthing is wrong. Is it just the ecm or the ecm and chip. and the main thing is thier a way to check this.
thanks for the hlp ahead of time.

odds are the ECM is fried.
the MEMCALs seem to be pretty tough, but it could very well be dead too.
it a good possibility that you won't be able to pull codes by jumping the ALDL or with a scanner, but if you are able to get into it with a scanner, look at the voltage reading in the data stream. if it reads high or low, the ECM is dead with out a doubt.

I'm guessing that it isn't dry. I've washed circuit boards, including ECM/PCM motherboards, and a lot more sensitive (CMOS) cards operating at a lot higher voltages (like 40KV) with no problems. The big key is getting it dry BEFORE applying power. And even at 14V, there likely isn't enough voltage to flash over any traces or component leads. Most of the ECMs I've been in have Mylar caps, so water shouldn't be a problem there, rither.
I'd be more suspect of corrosion at the edge connections from the water than actual ECM damage. And you'll want to wash and throoughly dry the ECM once again, and inspect socket connections closely for water. Avoid compressed air for drying - Heat and light air movement only, or tme.

well that sounds right.
I do pull code 36 though but that was thier right before it got wet. im going to check all the connections and see whats up....
Before it wasnt going into closed loop because it wasnt reading the o2 properly i wonder if its just didnt get corroded or somthing?
