Short at Starter, help

ok im a dumbass and caused a short at the starter. i believe it was the starter because there was blue smoke coming from under the pass. side header.

i was cutting these wires from the old a/c harness which i dont need anymore.

i checked all the fuses etc. but they're all ok. i turn the key and nothing happens. does the starter has a fuse in itself or do i need a new one...? or is it something different?

thanks,
nebu

There's a fusible link to the starter about 5-10" away from the positive terminal.

A fusible link is a piece of wire that blows when too much current passes. Its a fuse. Just follow the wires from the positive terminal to the starter. Eventually you will see a blown thin wire.

What he is saying is look down at the starter solenoid and you will see a big wire coming from the battery and two to three smaller wires on the same large terminal post. The smaller wires are the fusible links that provide power to other parts of the car. One of them just happens to provide power to the A/C relay which you have cut out of the system. Judging from what you have said, I would have to say without a doubt that you cut two or more wires at once and didn't have the battery disconnected.

ahhh ok got it now. one of the smaller wires is blown about an inch away from the connection. is it possible to solder it together again or do i have to get a new one?

You will have to get a new one and splice it in.

Not sure how many AMPs there is, when you get one at the auto parts store just ask for a fusible link for a GM car. The package will have GM on the label to tell you which manufacturer it is for. Almost forgot, when you replace it, be sure to cut the wire several inches back from the break. Otherwise you will not have gotten all the old fusible link out and will still have the problem.
