However, if you want to marry that 84 z cluster into the 90rs, grab yourself. Get ready for a project. What I suggest is based on personal experiance from converting my 87 700r4 / 5.7 IROC TO speed density, and all of the electronics that were required, including the mechanical to electronic speedo conversion.
BEWARE!!! If your 90RS is speed density reliant, removing the VSS will cause the vehicle to operate in constant open loop mode*.
(Assuming that you have a 700r4 in the 90RS) The 90-92's have an electronic vehicle speed sensor located where your 84's speedo cable hooks up to the trans. The pre-89 cluster is cable driven from the same location on the trans.
You will need to check and make sure that the VSS (vehicle speed sensor) on the 90's trans is a gear driven electrical unit. If so, ok.
Remove the electronic VSS from the trans. Install the gear driven cable/speedo unit from an 84-89 year model, and install a driven speedo cable assembly to the cluster.
When it comes to electronics and a few other things, Swaps and conversions from the 82-89's to the 90-92's are NOT really plug and play affairs! Too bad. Enough said.
Good luck.
