hatch release gremlin

My hatch release button does not release when the ignition is on anymore.
It works just fine with the key out, just like before.

I noticed this shortly after a heavy rain storm got my carpets a little wet but I don't think that is the problem, or is it?

What gives?

Your hatch isn't supposed to work with the ignition on. I think its a safety feature. Both of my cars dont anyway.

Adjust your t-tops so they dont leak. Water in interior is bad.
Take off the t-tops, take off the plastic piece in front by the windshield. Adjust the thing where the t-top rod inserts into.

Yes the hatch release will work with the ignition on and the car running. However the hatch will not work at this time if the shifter is in any position other than "park" or "Neutral". On some models it will not work with the engine running unless the parking brake is set to the first detent.

Thank you trickster.

I never really tried popping the hatch while the car was running lately. I dont let my cars run anymore unless i'm in them. After having my 86 take off in reverse by itself because the linkage was not set right, i just dont.

Ouch, I bet that was a wake up call and a half.

i'm just lucky the neighbors shop across the street stopped it. The old 305 had a high idle too so it got up to at least 20.

I wish it was that simple, the problem is far beyond adjustment issues. Rust under the weatherstriping and the windshield frame is leaking from somewhere. They are gonna get taped shut for the winter soon. Less wind noise too.

The release will not operate regardless of parking brake position with the key on. Only with the key out will the hatch release. I have a T5. This is a new problem, it worked properly up until now.

i'm suspecting the switch on the hand brake that enables/disables you to use the hatch release switch when the car is running. Check that out.

Also, you can PM Trickster and ask him if he has the schematics for the wiring (if you need them).
