Motors going bad probably, the next stage will be stopping every
few inches when the internal circuit breakers start tripping.

Take the inner panels off and lube the tracks and any other parts that look like they need it. Clean them out first though. Sometimes when they get gunked up they just run slow because of build up in the tracks. Done it twice and believe me the can of cleaner/degreaser and new lube is way cheaper and easier than tracks and motors if you don't need them yet. Give it a try, If it doesn't work at least the panels are already off so you can replace the motors.

So just the general cleaning and relubing of the tracks really helps that much? A friend of mine had SLOW windows and thought it was the motors so he replaced them ( a very unpleasant task) and unfortunately they still run JUST as SLOW...

The window motors are slow compared to other cars, true; however, you can speed them up a bit with a thorough cleaning, which will probably prolong motor life as well. Check the following link for other helpful info:

Clean and lube all moving parts, for me, an added dose of silicon spray lube afterwards and every six months keeps 'em moving. Consider upgrading the wiring and cleaning all electrical connections associated with the power windows. The PW electrical system, like the headlight wiring, appears to be marginally designed, at best.
