Fuel Gauge
It is STUCK in the Full Position(Way Past F)....I got gas and filled it up....But have gone over 100 miles now...Gauge still reads PAST FULL? is there a way of reseting this thing? without pulling the dash apart and pulling cluster?
Thanks

I have an 86 Iroc and had the same problem. Got underneath the car and found that the ground to the fuel tank electrical stystem was unplugged. The ground is in front of the fuel tank and when you scoot underneath the back of the car it is easy to see because there is a big gap.
Hope this helps ya out.

Well, if you have a manual on the car and there isn't a problem with the wiring. Then that leaves you with one of two assumptions. 1. the guage is bad or 2. the sending unit is bad. Did this problem just suddenly occur or have you had it for awhile?

Yes, I agree on the 2 ideas you stated. It just started....I filled the bird up with gas, went over 100 miles, it's still on full. If i can find a gauge for the cluster, i'll get one off ebay. The sending Unit is another story. Don't look like fun to have to rip the tank apart to get to it. However, I been saying that about every project on this car
and all I do it keep Learning...so...It's all good. I just got this car 3 months ago, and it's been a non-stop project. However, that is why i bought it...Project. Almost there...Just glad i stumbled accross this Board\Site
... I run a Motorcycle website, However I sold my bike...LOL so now it's on to my Bird!
Weeeeeeeeeee Off to find a cheap gauge!
Thanks Trickster......

I wouldnt go buy a new guage untill u r absolutely sure that that is what u need. For surely its not the sending unit if your car is running. If your sending unit was gone you probably would not be able to start your car. Im still stuck on the theory that it is a bad ground. Did the fuel gauge in your car act erraticaly (bounce up and down) before it got stuck on full? Did you scoot under the car from the back inbetween the exaust pipes infront of the fuel tank and see the cable coming out of the top of the gas tank that connects to the frame, unibody? Is it unplugged? Your car will still run if this ground is dissconnected. If it is dissconected than your fuel gauge will be stuck on full like mine was. I just plugged the ground back in and my fuel gauge worked right away. I understand your frustration as I went through the same deal and had my car dieing all over the place cuz i was unsure how much fuel I had. If you have to ask a couple questions to find this ground ill be happy to ansewer them. Did you actually find the ground? IF you did and it was connected try unplugging it then plugging it back in. Maybe that will work. Hope this helps and hope youve located this ground as this is most likely your problem. Also inspect this ground wire for deteriation and also make sure the ground pluggin on the frame has not worked its way loose from the frame. Hope to hear a reply soon.

I have to disagree with Irocstang on his comment "that if the sending unit was bad the car wouldn't run". The sending unit and the pump are two seperate units and wired seperately. If the float on the sending unit was stuck in the full position, then the car would read full all the time. If the plug on the tank was disconnected then the car wouldn't. By the same token, if the ground for the tank was bad then the pump wouldn't operate either. So that leaves him with the option of a bad sending unit, a bad guage, or a bad wire from the sending unit to the guage. He could also try tapping on the fuel guage to see if it moves.

no ground issues.... i tried the tapping on the guage... nothing...still stuck! i have not taken the dash apart to get the the guage, but that's my next feat.... To answer the ? about bouncing guage nope no problems until i filled her up and the guage stuck....all else fails GET a bigger hammer...
... might scare it into working
~
Thanks Guys, When i find the issue i will post it...this is a weird one.

Hey Greg...
Check the resistance between the sending unit and GROUND. It should read anywhere between 0~90 OHMs... If you've already driven 100 or so miles, my guess would be a reading of roughly 50 OHMs now...
