hatch motor wont stop

Ok, before you begin criticising me for posting on something that has been talked about alot just hear me out.

After searching I found one post that directly related to my problem.

https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...ht=hatch+motor

However!! my motor works fine when I use a screwdriver to trigger the hatch pulldown or release. It goes full cycle both ways and stops, but when I close the hatch the motor wont stop and there is no "clicking" noise that is normally heard when the reversing switch is triggered, stopping the unit.

Other than a worn gear which seems to be the cure for the issue listed what could it be?

Symptoms:
1)Hatch motor will not stop when hatch is used as trigger, motor does not get "hot".
2)Hatch motor goes through full pull-down cycle when triggered with screwdriver.

Solutions:
???

Thanks guys, and gals, appreciate the patience and input

Dave

On a side note, this happened last night at 10PM, had to take off the panel and wire in a switch so that I could power off the unit from inside the car after the hatch got as far down as it could, i think it rested a little high anyway, but either way it stays put and is very secure. Until I have the time to deal with it this may be the solution...

Oh and feel free to just email or pm me if you dont feel like posting. dcm01003@excite.com

Remove the hatch surround trim and inspect the hatch pull-down unit. There are a lot of things that it could be. I suspect a broken motor housing and gear nut, but since I don't have access to it I can't diagnose it. Take a look at the Tech Article I wrote on repairing the 1986-91 hatch pull-down units. Bad guides are also a problem since they'll cause the latch portion to do funny things due to misalignment as it travels.

What has happened is that the motor mount housing is broken and since the motor is loose it continues to try and pull the hatch down. This happened to me recently and I had to get the re-enforced mount that Lonsal sells at TDS. He is one of the sites vendors and is located at the top of the page in the middle of the vendors gallery. BTW, the original mount housing is made of plastic and breaks easily.

Last night when I had to wire in the switch I had to remove the interior plastic panel and before I even did anything I inspected the entire unit. Nothing appeared broken and the areas where the mounts were looked fine. However, that doesnt say anything.

why exactly would the motor keep running if the mounting bracket is loose? Just so i understand this better.
