HVAC Blower Ground

Where the heck is it? I have lost both the blower motor grounds (yes, there's two wires connected to the ground connector) and the ground for the blower's high speed relay (I assume, haven't DVOM'ed it yet). I have replaced the ground for the blower with a wire I had from a fog lamp kit and attached that to the braided ground strap screw on the bulkhead, but I have no idea where the ground is for the high speed relay.

When I turn the blower switch to any of the lower speeds (not using the relay, with the way I have it set up) the blower works, but the second I turn the high speed on, the blower shuts off. I have power from the FL and the switch TO the relay, but not OUT of the relay. I assume the relay is not being switched on and off because I also have a new relay in there, and I know there is power on the switching side of the circuit.

Do the blower motor and relay have a common ground, and if so, where in the heck is it?

P.S> it's snowing here and I'm freezing my butt off!

The ground point for the high speed blower relay is at the back of the left hand cylinder head unless you have the VIN "H" model, then it is on the back of the right hand cylinder head. BTW, it is still toasty here.

the high side on the blower motor also uses two fusable link wires in there too... I am in the same boat and have made sure all the contacts and relays are good.. so I figure the fusible link wire (one or the other or both) has burnt off somewhere..)

The thing is, Angelis, that I already checked the power side of the relay, both from the HVAC control head and from the fusible link. Both the FL wire and the HVAC control wire have power, so I figure that the relay ground is screwy, since that is the only other thing that can direct the power flow through the relay.

Having a problem with the ground on the cyl head makes since, since I may not have gotten them tight enough when I redid the head gaskets in July... I'll go through and tighten all the wires back there just to be on the safe side...

BTW, it's no longer snowy here but it's still cold as heck..

The relay should be somewhere near the blower motor. It doesn't look like the other relays that run the engine, so it should stand out a little.

And I figured it out, Trickster. Somewhere along the line, either I forgot to reconnect those grounds (how was it working then? I dunno) or the bolt came out of the hole. I put another bolt in the hole and everthing's peachy now.

BTW, I hope to get a GM Helms manual for Christmas...

hmm. a relay huh.. is it on the inside of the car or on the outside.. if it is on the outside in the engine bay I have other problems lol.. no relays are actually present out there... other than on the driver's side by the booster...

Do you know where the blower motor is? It's on the opposite side from where the brake booster is. The relay should be mounted somewhere near the heater box assembly, or even to it. I am not quite positive of this because your cars are of an earlier model year than mine is, and things could have gotten mixed up in the shuffle between years. What other problems are you having?

yea. i know where it is lol.. changed the core about 3 weeks ago.. and stare at the blower motor ever time i open the hood.. it's not like there has ever been another spot in any GM car i have ever seen for the blower motor.. always on the passengerside.. as for relays.there are none either near the box, blower, or attached to any of those. not that i can find anyhow.. does not mean that there should not be.. I suppose i can look at one of my other ones to see if perhaps the previous owner cut the relay out or something.. My only problem is simply no high on the blower motor.. has all the other settings. just no high lol.. and the only thing i can think of is that the wire for the high side has a break in it.

Hmmm... mine was (key word being WAS.. I broke it removing it from the bracket) clipped to a bracket that is attached to one of the heater housing bolts. I'll see if maybe my dig camera has enough juice left to take a pic of it for you tomorrow...

:edit: And when you find the relay, you will know where your problem is because you can test all of the sections of the circuit at the relay connector with a DVOM (provided you have one, of course).
