HELP - Car OFF, but belt still turning and noisy

84 Trans Am - 383 Stroker

I was out driving, ran to get groceries. On way home i got on the road and i basically punched it , all of a sudden started making this weird noise under the hood like something came loose and was banging around.

I pulled over turned off the ignition and the car was still making a noise under the hood, i popped the hood and the belt was still turning, i had to disconnect the battery to get it to stop.

This is my first project car and im pretty n00b under the hood but im in the process of learning. Ran across this helpful board and am hoping somebody can help me out.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Is the starter maybe shorted on the positive wire and keeping the starter engaged?

Hmmm. Its so freakin weird, engine totally off but belt keeps turning, if i d/c the battery it stops, if i connect batter it comes on again, with out starting the car itself. Just connecting the battery.

*scratches head*

Its the main belt - the serpentine belt. It just keeps going and going while making an annoying noise. This happen right after i punched the gas. Pulleys are still going too. Makes a "wooom wooom woooom wooom" nosie.

Im just really confused as to why it would keep turning after i turn car off and only stop when i d/c battery. And automatically start up when i plug battery back on with out starting car.

Chek Starter! Its the only thing that can turn the engine over without running!

wow

does your car do any other tricks?!

I am in agreement get a new starter.

with your engine you might want to get a mini torquer gear reduction

if you stick with autozone plan on replacing it every 3-4 months

you're probably gonna need a new flexplate also.

*cringes to think what the old one may look like*

Yah good point.

No other tricks — with way luck has been on it lately i'm sure a new one will come up.

I need to go over the electrical. Something is shorting out all of the interior gauge lights and CD Player has no power either.

I dont think its related to my other problem, and hopefully its just a fuse or something stupid.

I posted here about finding shorts hope it helps.

I just threw away a flexplate. It always works that way

BTW It probably sounded like I was bashing autozone, but you can get a decent gear reduction starter from them, just indictating that stock starters are not up to the task of being dependable on high compression motors.
