SI to CS alternator(resistor?)
Over the winter,i've converted my car(86' coupe) over to a serpentine system which required me to convert from the old style SI alternator to the newer CS type.Wiring everything was simple,S terminal gets the constant 12volt,L terminal gets keyed 12 volt.I've read a few things that suggest that i need to put a resistance wire of at least 35 ohms and 1 watt cap.to the L wire.Does my car need this? What happens if i don't use it?I 've read posts where some guy's use it and some where they don't.Everything seems to work right, but the junkyard CS i cleaned up and was using quit working and i had to buy a new one.I'm wondering if the resistor wire had something to do with it or if it was just it's time to die.Where can i get one of these resistor wires if i do need one,i've seen a AC #8078 and #1742 part numbers mentioned.Would it be possible to find at the salvage yard?I'm cheap but i like to do things the right way if i can afford it.(I got all the brackets, pulleys and power steering pump for the serpentine system ,with ac delete pulley, for 25.00 at the junkyard by the way, aluminum reverse rotation water pump bought on ebay to finish this conversion.)Sorry for all the questions, but i don't want to fry this new alternator.
