Sticky High and Low beam

My RS is developing a quirk. When I switch from low to high beam or visa versa, the switch seems to stick sometimes and all front lights go out. I have to switch it back and forth until the lights come back on. Is there a switch in the steering column that's going bad and or could it also be the turn sig and high / low lever?
Thanks for the advice.

I thnk for as old as these suckers are, it's deffinatly the switch itself. Mine tottaly stopped working. My friends (91) only works depending on the angle of the steering column... lol.

There's a switch attached to the lower steering column that's actuated by a rod connected to the high/low beam select lever.

I'd change the switch first and if the problem still exists then the plastic stalk may have a split in it that doesn't allow it to apply full pressure to the rod (so it feels "sticky").

This happenes to me all the time. Just change the tilt on the steering column and then turn on or off your brights. I mean it doesn't fix the problem but it temporarily remedies it. Sucks not having lights good luck post back if you fix it!!!

I have seen that headlight switch be out of adjustment. some of them are adjustable. you might want to take a look at that before you replace the switch. the one I replaced mine with had sliders on it for adjustments.

Thanks all for the response. I replaced the low/high bean switch on the steering column and all is well again. Again thanks!

Hey, i gotta question, I've been re-doing my dash wiring and stuff. I don't have ANY rod going to that switch. How hard is it to throw a new one in? can i just cut a rod and slide it into place? or do i have to take apart the column?

thanks ahead of time.

Is the column out of the vehicle? Would be a much easier for access. I replaced the faltering high/low switch with the column in but still ended up lowering it to get to the nuts holding the switch to the column.

The high/low switch rod has unique bends in it at the point(s) where it slides into the lever receptacale and into the switch. You might be able to purchase one from GM if it's still available or find one from a donar junk yard column. Or, you could probably custom bend a mild steel rod to fit but it might be eaiser to remove the column to make sure the custom rod will line up and activate the switch.

Since the rod is missing from your column, it must have been removed or dropped out of it's place and been discarded or lost at some point.. Hopefully you wont have to dismantle the column trying to install a new rod.

Good luck!

Yea, i couldn't figure out how to get the column out before when i was messing with the wiring. so i hope thats not the case. I can't pass MD inspection without it.
