Cruise control and SES light

I have a '91 bird with TBI and 5 spd tranny. Whenever I use the cruise control I get a SES light. After about 10 minutes the light goes on and about 5-10min after shutting the cruise the light goes off. I have tried this with different speeds from ~50-75mph it always comes on. If I do not use the cruise control the light does not come on no matter how long I maintain the same speed. I cant scan for a code because it only goes on while cruise is on so it is never on while car is stopped. Any ideas why this is happening.

btw it was happening before I changed the chip

The light doesnt necessary have to be on to retrieve a fault code. The code should be stored in the memory of the engine control module.

Oh, I didn't realize that... I think I'll bring it to autozone then to get a scan.
