> its probably a bad sending unit. And the sending unit is in the gas tank which means dropping the rear axle and dropping the tank.
You could test it with an ohmmeter/multimeter by finding the pink wire that goes to the fuel tank and measuring that wire and its resistance to ground. Connect black test lead of meter to the metal chassis and the red test lead to where you want to test for resistance. The third gen sending unit reads 90 to 0 ohms depending on how full the tank is. A full tank reads 90 ohms. If its reading 90 ohms and you're tank is not full then its your sending unit. If you take your gauges you will see two connectors. For 86 camaro, Connector C1, pin 4 connects to the wire that goes to the sending unit.
If it doesn't read about 90 ohms and you have nothing even close to a full tank then the gauge itself is probably bad.

accept ??
except..
may also be caused by loose or dirty connection at the instrument panel plug pins,
happens on the s series trucks all the time like in my 91 and my brothers 92
causes all kinds of problems with guages
good luck

Yeah, my fuel gauge is slow to read it's level. It works, but it's really slow. Say I'm empty then fill up, I turn the car on after it's full and the needle takes like 2 minutes to go to full. Why does it do that?
