Ignition timing problem

I can't time my sons 86 firebird 305 "H" code. To get it to run I have to time it with the distributor plugged in. Timing it unplugged and then plugging it in does not advance the timing, we have tried everything. 3 ign. modules, coil, pickup coil, wires, plugs even the computer. We found the cat had taken a crap and clogged the exhaust, replaced it but it barely helped. The car is driveable but timing is off about 70 deg. and little power. Someone told me that the distributors had 6,7 and 8 gears on them and I have the wrong one. It makes sense but I can't find any info, He ttook it to 2 shops and they could not find the problem. SOMEONE PLEASE help !!!! It has a hei distributor no vac. adv. 7 pin module

it means that the ECM is not receving Feedback from the distributer

sounds like a wiring issue.... if computer isnt recieving information from the distributer thats what 1x referance means a feedback failure

there should be 4 wires hooked into the Dist / Ecm communications

1. black/red
2. purple/white
3. white
4. tan/black

then there should be 2 other wires as well
but have no ecm communication to the ecm

1.pink goes to ignition switch
2.white goes to inst. cluster

but my only way id say is the tug 'n snug check make sure all connections ok
then check for damaged / frail wiring
