1988 IROC Fog Light Problem
1988 IROC Fog Light Problem
Hey gang,I'm hoping someone can help me sort through my fog light problem on my 1988 IROC Camaro. I'm not getting any power to the lights and had to temporarily remove them since they have to operate for the car to pass Virginia State Inspection. I tested the lights themselves and they do work so I know they are good. I replaced the fog light switch thinking this was probably the culprit but I still don't have power to the lights. The fog light switch does not seem to be getting any power either, since the green light does not illuminate when switched on. The fuses all look good so I'm not sure what to check next. All suggestions and ideas are greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
M.L.

the only things left to check are as follows.
1. The Foglight Relay - It should be located on the drivers side under the hood right near the washer fluid tank. Try replacing this part since it is a inexspensive fix.
2. The Foglight power lead - Wich is located near the relay. it is a wiring clip that plugs into the headlight circuit to get power. The wire colors are green and black. (green is the hot wire, and as usual black is the ground)
3. Wiring - this is the only thing left that could be wrong with them. make sure you check the wires that go in front of the radiator support, as these are the most likley to be damaged because of where they are located.
So from my own personal expieriances with these irocs, The educated guess would be the relay. Those do go bad, The same problem happened with my friends 86 iroc. As it turned out (you guessed it) foglight relay.
So good luck man, and cudos on owning such a nice car.
PM me if you have any more questions,
Zach

hey guys...
i just went out to check my relay - by any chance are there two mounted in the same places on both sides of the car? I unplugged one and tried the head lights and that side did not pop up. The fog light relay that was given to me by autozone would not fit so i'm not positive i have the right relay.
anyway - just checking. its completely possible the guys at autozone gave me the wrong relay also.
and can someone tell me which fuse goes to the fog lights also - all the labeling on my fuse block is faded off.

I'm not sure about the relay location, but I am sure that if you don't know EXACTLY what you need at Autozone, and you trust the average autozoner behind the counter, you will leave with the wrong part. I think when they hire people, if the applicant can show that he/she knows the average car runs on gas, they automatically start as a manager. To get hired as a redshirt, you just need a heartbeat.

James, ironically in the link you provided, there is another link with a pic of the green light. However, it is not how EMTGuzman described it. In the link, the green light is actually on the bottem of the fog light switch itself, not next to it. Personally, I have never seen such a switch in an Iroc.

I was actually wondering about that. After posting, I was looking at that pic again and trying to decide weather or not that was a reflection. It really does look like a light in the picture. Anyway, thanks for clearing that up. Looks like you have a nice, clean driver's area
. Regarding the light that Guzman was describing, I, too, have never come across one. Guzman, would you mind posting a pic of your switch for reference? Thanks.

hey guys, just letting you know 1985-1987 IROCZ had a foglamp switch that didnt illuminate, however 1988-1992 IROCZ + Z28 had a foglight switch that had the same kind of light the defogger had, only a lime green color.
Also, if you want to upgrade to the "green light" you can. This way you actually remember that your foglights are on.... What i did was took the foglight switch out of an 88 IROCZ. took a good part of the harness behind it. brought it home, removed the old one. installed the new harness to the old two wires ( just match the colors) the you run the purple wire to the gauge lights, and the brown one to a power. and VIOLA! cool new green light. FYI i did this swap in my 86 iroc so it definatly works.........
And i'm not sure about the foglight relay in a Pontiac. I will look at my friend 89 T/A and get back to you about that.

'86 and earlier have 2 relays, one per light. 87 up, have one relay on the driver's side by the windshield washer. That's you have 2 relays on your 85.

According to the ones listed online, never seen in myself, they are the same. Mine has the Off on the left, On in the middle, and the indicator light on the right.

The IROC switch doesn't look anything like yours (if that's what you're saying). Check the link above for a pic of an IROC switch.

Ahh the dreaded Virginia State inspection! One of the reasons I don't live there and my parents still do
Sorry... I've had many problems with that state throughout my years of living there and driving. They sure are strict!

Re: 1988 IROC Fog Light Problem
I am having a similar problem with my fog lights. I thought i would post it here instead of crowding up the board with another fog light thread. I have a 1990 Iroc and when I bought it came without bulbs in the fog lights. I flipped the switch once or twice and the little green light lit up. I finally got around to putting bulbs in the lights and they came on and worked for about 2 minutes. The little green light on the switch no longer comes on which is strange because it is a backlit switch and it still lights up. So did half of my switch go out? The relay looks fine, bulbs are good, and i am about to go crazy.
Re: 1988 IROC Fog Light Problem
I too am having a Fog Light problem but on an 88 Trans Am. When I jump the relay, they light up. But no power to the switch on the dash. I'm running out of places to look. Any ideas ?

I checked the relay and sure enough, it was completely corroded. After replacing it the fog lamps lit right up! Thanks for the expert advice!

Yeah, I'd like to see that as well.
