ECM Install/Information Questions/Instructions
ECM Install/Information Questions/Instructions
Hello,
This is my first post here so first off, just wanted to say "hello" to everyone. I migrated over from Welcome to Z28.com (best F-Body site on the net!).
I currently own a 1994 B4C Camaro, so I don't have a 3rd Gen, but my dad does.
Recently, his 1989 L98 TransAm GTA was diagnosed with having a bad ECM in it. My dad says that they told him it was a "secondary chip" that was failing. To my knowledge these cars only had one single chip, which was the ECM/EPROM, correct?
Anyway, the dealer wanted to charge him $250 for the chip and install, and I've heard that changing chips on these cars is a breeze. I've already contacted Jason Cromer at Sam Taylor about a chip and was quoted $46, but that still leaves me with the problem of installing the chip.
From what I've gathered, the chip is located somewhere underneath the dashboard. Does anyone have some photos on how to get to the chip and what I need to do to replace it? I honestly don't know anything about the 3rd Gen cars, as I don't own one (but I will someday
)
Any help would be great!
Thanks,
Dan

I don't have a picture, but it is under the padded "glove box" on the passenger side. You'll need to remove some dash trim to get to it, it's not that bad.

itts underneath the das on the passenger. you have to remove the kick panel and than look up against the wall and youll see it. itws a couple eof bolts and it sloides right out. than remove the 2 bolts holding a plate on the top of the computer.(youll have to pry off the cover but be careful doing that) the chip comes out and installs like ram in a computer. 2 clips on either side of the chim push them down and pull out the chip. instalation is the reverse of removal(obviously lol) the clips on the sides will automaticly clamp(iirc) the chip in place. 30 minutes tops.
