ALTERNATOR HELP PLEASE

Hi Guys
I hope you can help , I have a 1986 305 tpi iroc , today I had my engine idling and the battery gauge was showing only about 11.5 volts , I checked the main wire at the rear of the alternator and it was very hot , I stopped the engine and let it cool down and then restarted it this time the wire stayed cool , I then put a volt gauge across the battery terminals but the voltage remained at 11.5 volts even when rpm was raised , do you think it is an alternator or a wiring fault , any help appreciated . Steve

well, myn is doing the exact same thing

Id double check to make sure your belt is tight...

If not its probly time for a new alternornator there like 70 bucks so u may as well replace it because 11.5 will drain the battery pretty bad.. in fact myn barely started one day because of it

anyhow hope it helps

You checked voltage across the battery, but what was the alternator putting out at the post?

Verify grounds, good electrical connections and belt tension like stated above.
