I just redid the one on my 89 RS. The connector itself (inside the spoiler) failed to get any voltage to the light assembly. I picked up another at a local junkyard for free and spliced it into the present harness. You might also check the contacts by your hatch pulldown to make sure they are clean - there are 2 brass "pins" on the botttom side of the hatch and 4 brass contact "plates" by the latch assembly, the 2 outside ones are used by the brake light.

just check to see if the two electrical connectors coming from behind each rear seat and connecting to the lift struts are connected.

If your third light is in the spoiler then the connections are through contacts at the hatch pull down motor area. I had the same problem with my 89 RS. One of the conacts was broken but i jury rigged to work.
