i have a REALLY wierd short in my 86 camaro

i had a short in my car about 4 months ago that made all of my lights flash and my raqdio flash on and off. Also any time i turned my wheel to the right my battery guage wouold drop down then when i turn to the right it would go back up. well i looked around and found that my radio wires were stripped and shorting out. well here we are for months later and the problem is back.... but this time everything is the same except when i turn to the right not only does my battery guage drop but my temp guage goes up until i turn left then it goes back down. thnx in advance and sorry so long.

??????????????? Maybe the power leads from the starter are getting smashed by your steering linkage where they run under the front of the motor.

i checked that but the main wire from the battery runs over the linkage and the other two wires run straight up the side of the motor.

my battery cable was melted a little from heat off the ex- manifold just enough that when i turned it would bump up against the motor causing this to happen. I would check the alt wiring too.

i checked both of those wires and didnt find any problems but replaced them anyways... it didnt do the trick i still have the short. i have noticed that i think there is either a seperate short or the same one acting in a different way. now not only does that happen when i turn but when i use something that draws power i.e. headlight, fog lights heater... by radio cuts off for a sec then back on. it alsop does this when i hit a bump. i hope someone can help cause me and everyone i know are lost. thnx.

A few Questions...

Is the car moving when you experience the left and right had turn issue?

Is the steering column loose?

Are the motor mounts ok?

The temp gauge going up is due to a short in the sender wire. It may be rubbing on the block or is somewhere between sender and the gauge.

It could also be a bad ignition switch. All the gauges go full sweep when you turn the key before cranking. A short in the steering column around the switch can cause these things and would be suspect due to the turning and the bumps.

The on off radio sounds like a circuit breaker tripping. Or the hot wire from the starter being grounded out.

Check for bad ignition switch, motor mounts, loose column, or bad ground from battery to chassi and block.

most of the time the car is moving when i experience the left or right hand turn issues, but it will do it once in a while not moving. i have noticed that the car usually has to be in drive though.

no my steering column is tight except the custom steeing wheel itself. its kinda loose but there are no wires runnin up there.

motor mounts should be good...

i check the sender unit wire from the firewall down and it was fine... could it be shorting inside the dash?

the ignition switch makes since. but i have also notice that the ignition switch is run by a metal bar until it makes it to the area of my brake petal and then it turns into an electrical box. could this still cause that kinda prob?

one last thing you said look at the ground wire from battery to chassis and to block i have only seen a ground from battery to block and it might have some grease covering it. but where should the one to the chassis be?

The ground from the battery to the chassis, on my car atleast, isn't too hard to find, it runs from the neg. terminal of the battery to the body 6" away.
