This should get you started:

https://www.thirdgen.org/vats

https://www.thirdgen.org/vats_passkey_system

You can also search the forums for "VATS bypass", there are several articles on different methods of bypassing it.

First, you need a new ignition cylinder with VATS wiring on it. It should have a white wire and an orange wire on it. The cylinder will come with dummy keys with the proper cut pattern. You will need to locate the VATS ignition wiring harness and hook up the new ignition, then you'll have to get a locksmith with a PassKey or VATS Interagator. He'll put the dummy key in it and then he can tell you what resistor number you need to cut the new key with.

Or you could have someone burn you as new prom with VATS disabled and get another cylinder and key.

But what about bypassing the passkey system?

My 91z wont even try to crank...we replaced the ignition switch...and Im positive I had VATS disabled on the PROM chip I bought from TPIParts..

And we have voltage all the way to the blk/yel wire going into the PassKey module. But still cant verify if we have voltage to the starter enable relay, because we cant find it

I just got in touch with GM, and they didn't even have the code for my '89 IROC (I wanna spare key or three), and the way they kept records back then, the chick said she couldn't trace it, even with the VIN i gave her.
Try getting in touch with GM, or a dealer, and they might be able to chase that up with the VIN...

Cheers

On our cars the VATS and the Passkey are the same or rather there is no passkey system only VATS. If they truely disabled VATS in the prom then you have another problem. Chances are they didn't disable it.

lizardkng, the VATS system on Fbodies does two basic things to avoid theft. The first is in the prom, where the ECM will not fire the injectors without a VATS signal. The second is that the VATS module controls a starter enable relay so the engine will not crank.

Disabling VATS from the prom will allow the injectors to fire, but you still need to rearrange the wiring going to the starter enable relay. The starter enable relay is located behind the driver side kick panel. You need to bypass the relay so the engine will crank without relying on the VATS module. To do this, splice together the wire running to the relay from the ignition switch (will have power when the key is in the crank position), and the wire at the relay which goes to the starter solenoid.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact us.

Nice!

TPIParts people.

Right now, I cant find my invoice, so I dont know my order date...I had sent an email to you last week to find out what info I needed in order to verify from you that my VATS is in fact disabled, as I am positive I requested. Cant find my invoice, so I dunno my order date.

And whats this about no PassKey system, only VATS? The black plastic box I pulled from under the dash on the passenger side clearly says "Delco Electronics PassKey Module".

Do you remember more or less when you ordered it? If you can't, PM or email me the name you placed the order under and I'll look up the specs we have on file for you.

PM sent.

I *think* I bought it from TPI parts...the box I got it in is at the shop so I cant verify...it was either TPI Parts or TPI Chips...I just cant remember off the top of my head...and cant access the box right now...

Thanks for your help.

If thats still the case that the security light stays on, then VATS is still active.

If you have 48 minutes a trip to radio shack will get your car started....

Follow the VATS troubleshooting, except you'll try all 16 resistances, waiting 3 minutes between each attempt.

Are there any illustrations on how the starter enable relay would be wired to delete it? I was always under the impression that you can do that with a VATS delete with the PROM, but I guess that's not true?

I looked but I don't have a picture of it. VATS delete on the prom removes the need to send a square wave to it. The starter enable relay is on a separate circuit. You bypass it the same way you bypass any relay; find the 2 wires that are connected when the relay is energized, and jump those with a short wire that has male spade connectors on each end. They will probably be the thick ones. Make sure your jumper wire is the same gauge.

Re: HELP! with 1989 Iroc VATS system

How I did mine was if your still using stock motor the wires under the steering column you put resistors to the wires matching the resistor on your key this will let the injectors fire up, 2nd you have to ground the starter enable relay located on the driver side behind the kick panel, Relay will have 2 big yellow wires 1 thin green wire and 1 big green wire this will be the started enable relay. If you ground the small green wire when you turn the key you should here it click and it will crank, you can ground this wire to say to a secret push button to kind of still have the anti theft feature on the car or if you permanently want it to just crank over you connect the big yellow cable on the outside to the big green outside.
