help a dumbass

well i tried starting my car with the power wire for the distrubuter sitting on the intake (forgot it was unhooked) and everything worked for about a second then i heard a cracking and poping and smoke coming from the passenger side of the block i turned it off disconnected the battery checked to make the sure the wire was good and it was, hooked the battery back up now everything is dead except the headlights and interior lights. So i assume i blew a fusible link now which ones do i look for to see if there blown? I install transmissions for a living so im guess it shouldnt be that hard for me.

Did you check your fuses under the driver's side dash?

I WOULD SAY GO CHECK THE FUSIBLE LINKS.SINCE U WORK ON TRANNYS 4 A LIVING U SHOULD KNOW WHAT 2 LOOK 4 THE WIRES THAT U DON'T WANT 2 PINCH BETWEEN ENGINE&TRANS WHEN REINSTALLING A TRANS. NEXT 2 THE STARTER SOUNDS SILLY, BUT CAN HAPPEN.I THINK IT WILL BE PRETTY OBVIOUS IF 1 IS SHOT.GOOD LUCK MAN,HOPE U DIDN'T FRY ANY OF YOUR HARNESS

Do you mean the power wire for the (primary) coil? If so, that is fusible link B which is located at the lower RH Side of the engine near the starter.

well i cut the wire and used a spade connector so it would clip onto my hei prong on the new non cc dist. So which fusible link to i need to check and what do they look like? When i changed the starter there were 3 little red wires one big red wire and one thick black wire going to it is the fusible links of the 3 red wires.

It gonna be a red wire. I would rather see yolu take a few voltage drops and know for sure rather then guess it's a fusible link problem. I would see if you have 12v at the starter first. If you do, go from the terminal on the starter to the fuse block. If your DMM reads 0v, check it with a good ground as see if you have 12v(fuse block to ground). If you don't, i would say I'm 90% sure its that fusible link.
