lt1 dash swap in 84 gauge wiring
ive swapped a 93-96 camaro dash into my 84 and got most of the wiring done, i cant get any guages to work, obvisiouly my speedo isnt going to work its cable driven, and im not worried about that yet anyway.
What color ar the factory wires for fuel level, charging and coolant temp on a 84 z28 and another thing how many grounds are there at teh steering column 2 or 3.
I can get my tach to work but it idles under 500 and when you rev it it goes to about 2500 and goes down,
and the gauges are out of a lt1 car.

The links to the 85 and 86 wiring diagrams are in here and in the thirdgen tech articles:

I know its not 84 but it should be pretty close. A lot of the colors of the wires for the LT1 are the same colors or very similar.

Here is a general pinout of the bulkhead connector. Some wires may vary. I don't know what year this is from. I took these images from the LT1 wiring for dummies thread and combined them into one big image.

the way i worded it, was wrong, i havent swapped the lt1 in yet, just the dash, and instrument cluster.
i have everything working except for the tach, volts, coolant temp, oil pressure, (not worried about that one either i have a mech gauge) and fuel level
i have a mech speedo, im not worried abou that, as im gonna swap in a the vss stuff when i put the motor in.
i am getting power to the tach and the speedo, cut key on they come up off the stops at the bottom.
tach doesnt read right, it goes to 2000 and drops and flutters. from what ive read some people have this problem anyway. so im not to concerned with that until i swap the motor in.
volts does nothing stays at bottom and never moves, fuel does nothing, temp does nothing,
the oil pressure, even tho i dont care about it i hooked it up as well. and when you cut the key on, it slowly maxes itself out.
the wiring, i have the signal lights, high beam indicator, isnt lamps, seatbelt, that stuff works.
i am pretty sure i have the wiring right, as i have went to shoebox's site and got the pinout for the camaro cluster(95) and found diagrams on here and have matched everything with the corresponding wires.
Could it need the computer from the lt1 to be hooked up?
Ive spent about 8 hours on the wiring for the cluster, and cant figure it out.

Sure you got all the grounds and power wires hooked up? Double-check those b/c it sounds like a lot of stuff isn't working. Volts, fuel, oil pressure, coolant temp should be working. The only things that go through the LT1 computer before they go through the gauges are the vss and tach signals. When oil pressure isn't hooked up or connected to the oil pressure sensor, the gauge maxes out.

i got the 2 power wire to a switched ign source, orange and pink, and have both grounds hooked up black and a black with white tracer.
i have verified that power and ground is getting to the pigtail as well.
on 84
white - tach
pink - fuel level
dark green - coolant temp
as for voltage im not sure what to hook up. i read that it gets its signal from the fused powers. What about that red wire on a 95 cluster, says generator signal, but some people say have it grounded, ive done both no luck
how many factory grounds are there for the original cluster 2? that bolt to the dash support on the original.
ive also, didnt know if this would work or not, but i had everything hooked up, and run my wire for the coolant sensor to the engine bay and connected it to the sensor, straight to the clusters pigtail wire, nothing happened then either.
IM STUMPED
Thanks for your help tho.

I figured it out, i guess i hooked something up wrong, and a resistor blew on the back, i soldered a jumper wire, and all is working now.
Thanks for the help
