92 Bird Won't Start VATS.... maybe...
Hey guys, I have a 1992 firebird i just finished re assemblying (interior only, no engine changes)(car started perfect prior to now). Now it won't start, at first i thought it was vats, but there isn't a vats moodule in my car, hasn't been for as long as i have had it. I get no security light (checked with 2 known good bulbs), but i get a code 46. The starter relay has been bypassed since i have had it as well. What seems to be happening is the fuel is the problem, as i do get a spark. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!! By the way, i know that VATS stops the injectors but i don't get how i could have started it prior to now if thats what the problem was. Thanks!

the part at the key? no thats not it. the car cranks for as long as i hold it in start, i don't see how that would make a difference. I t just never starts, but it cranks jsut fine.

If you suspect VATS, I'd say check for fuel and spark. If you have spark but no fuel, it's very likely VATS. But code 46 speaks for itself.
You say you don't have VATS. Is it deleted in the chip or is the module missing? Because a missing VATS module will cause exactly that - a no start condition.
Check all ECM and ignition fuses, they might be the culprit.

well i've never had a vats module, and it started prior to now, and i think i smell gas when i attempt to start, i want to suspect the vats module, but its never been there even before the rebuild when it did start, i have no clue.

If you smell fuel from the exhaust after extensive cranking, it's safe to assume that injectors work and rule out VATS. In that case it could be timing or a no-spark condition.
You can also check for no-fuel condition by spraying some flammable liquid into the intake before starting. If the engine tries to fire, it's a fuel problem.

I just fixed a similar problem today. Of course I was debugging a hack wiring job, but one of the wires that attaches to the power block at the battery was grounding out. I could wiggle it and it would fire, wiggle some more it would die.
If it's tbi you can virtually see if it's getting fuel. Not sure which years but most of FI models there is a terminal on the OBD hook up that you can connect to with a wire directly from the battery to see if your fuel pump kicks on. If it does using that method and it doesn't when you turn the key then there is a break in the circuit. If the pump kicks in with the key on could be the the filter clogged or injectors.
You can unplug a spark plug wire and lay it where it will ground and get someone crank the car. If no arc there's your problem.
I hope my rambling helps.
