How to test ignition switch, is my problem my switch even?

ok. i just bought a 91 camaro rs w/ a tbi 305. the previous owner tells me the solenoid is on the way out. so it clicks and i have to start it quick when i want to. well, today i went to start it at school to come home, and my lights and everything work, but theres absolutely nothing coming from the starter. so i jacked up the car and used a screwdriver to cross terminals on the solenoid and it sparked and started right up. so i replaced the solenoid, and had the starter/solenoid combo tested at napa and it works perfectly. i install it on the car and the same problem. i was told it could be my ignition switch...? how do i test this? need answers ASAP. thanks.

Could be your neutral switch if an auto, or the clutch switch if a standard.
Edit-
Could also be the ignition switch.

Re: How to test ignition switch, is my problem my switch even?

I suggest you visit this link and look at the body wiring continued (Fig57) for 1991 models. On the bottom right side of the diagram is the starter circuit from the Ignition Switch. You will need to verify voltage, or no short in each circuit from the Igintion Switch to the Starter. Somewhere along the line you will find the culprit.

Not noted directly on the wiring diagram is that the PPL (purple) wire passes throung the firewall at connector C100. It will be connected to terminal B4 of the connector. If you need the pin out for the connector, on the same page just scroll down to the connector section. Choose any year, as it appears the B4 is used for the starter circuit every model year.

You will need to verify that your VATS system functions, and that the following relays/switches function correctly...Starter Enable Realy, Gear Selector Switch (auto tranny only) or Clutch Start Switch (manual tranny only).

I would also check the Fusible Link that supplies power to the Ignition Switch to make sure you have voltage through the Ignition switch to power the starter motor.

This link is to an Austin TGO page with the wiring diagrams.

Good Luck

The neutral switch s under the shifter console. Get out your multimeter, there isa large purple wire which is interrupted unless the transmission is in neutral or park.

As for the ignition switch, it is under the drivers side dash on the column. Take t off and look for signs of heat or melting. They are really cheap, so if everything else checks out, may as well replace it.

Edit,

Dave, good point on the VATS. The VATS system has a starter enable relay, but I have no expereince with it.

if you look on the bottom right of that diagram, you can see the gear selector switch and the starter enable relay. You should only have a few steps to trace. Just start at the ignition switch, verify that it does supply power to the yellow wire in crank. If it doesn't, replace the switch. If it does, continue on down the line.

Re: How to test ignition switch, is my problem my switch even?

well i found the problem. i had an aftermarket security system that the previous owner wired in. well i guess that my new system was thinking that my car was being broken into and messing w/ VATS. as soon as we unwired the aftermarket system and restored the VATS wiring to its former glory, she started right up ! i also replaced the solenoid so now its perfect.
