Wiper Motor Relay...HELP Please?!?

82 Trans Am. The wipers are not working and as the wiper motor works, I ordered a wiper motor relay. However, we can not seem to find out where the wiper motor relay is located. We looked under the dash on the driver's side and found the block for some of the other electricals, but no place for a relay. We checked the NAPA catalog for that year and found the part listed, but when we tried to get info about where it is located, the NAPA catalog says that there is no wiper relay on an 82 Trans Am. This is killing me. These are intermittent, pulse wipers. Checked fuse, switch motor...all appear to be fine. In fact, I just got the call that the circuit seems to be open/on all the time. Ran the ground to it just in case it was loose, but this was not the problem. Please help.

Damien

Re: Wiper Motor Relay...HELP Please?!?

The 82 Camaros did not have a wiper relay. They had a wiper switch on the turn signal lever and all the control and timing circuits are in the wiper motor. You also need to know if you have pulsed (delay mode) or non pulsed wipers, as the motor assembly is different. Seach on my screen name for the December 2006 - Jan 2007 time frame in this forum and you will find all the wiper schematics for the 82 Camaros. The 82 TA should have the same setup.

Here is the link, you will have to look down a few posts to find the schematics......

Re: Wiper Motor Relay...HELP Please?!?

I had a similar issue with my '82 Camaro. I checked every connector and tried 3 different wiper motors. Still couldn't figure it out. Then I ran a wire from the ground of the wiper motor to the ground on the car (firewall) and that fixed the problem. Maybe give that a try, it couldn't hurt. Good luck.

I guess I'm still confused Dave. The wiring diagram for the pulse wipers shows a "Wiper motor relay diode" located separate and apart from the "wiper Motor Assembly". This is the part whose location on the car I am trying to find.

Re: Wiper Motor Relay...HELP Please?!?

There's no relay.

It's not the diode. The diode is mounted on one of the plugs. It won't keep the wipers from working.

Try running the ground wire from one of the screws on the motor body to the firewall, as described. I'd almost bet money that it will fix your problem. Almost always does.

Re: Wiper Motor Relay...HELP Please?!?

Thanks guys, but the ground wire from motor to firewall was the first thing we tried. No luck. It is frustrating because when we apply current directly to the motor, it engages and the wipers activate. The switch appears to be working as well. The "cap" appears to house only the washer pump, so I don't think the problem is there. I guess I'll just have to try to pick up another motor and swap it out anyway to see if the issue is in there somehow as the wiring diagram seems to show most of the potential areas of failure as housed withon the wiper motor assembly. My mechanic friend is a bowtie specialist and owned an 82 camaro himself. When his wiper motor failed, the ground wire from motor to firewall trick worked. Not for me, though. This is frustrating. Why the heck would all the catalogs offer the wiper motor relayas a part for the 82 Trans Am when it apparently doesn't have one?

The "Wiper Motor Relay Diode" is acutally accross the "Park Realy" internal to the Wiper-Washer Assembly, aka the Wiper Motor. If you take another look at the diagram for the pulse wiper you will see the Park Relay in the top right corner of the Wiper Washer Assembly, with the diode across the relay coil, but external to the Assembly.

If you are applying currrent to the motor directly and it works, and you feel the switch works, have you traced the voltage on the WHITE wire from from the Wiper Fuse, through connector C100 (on the firewall) terminal B6 to terminal 2 on the wiper motor???? If this wire is cracked, broken or the terminal has become disconnected at either the firewall or the wiper motor, the wipers will not work. You should also see voltage on terminals 1 and 5 of the Wiper Motor (with the wiper switch in the off position) and at connector C100 terminals FU (purple wire) and ET (pink wire). Again, no voltage on these wires with the wiper switch in the OFF position will indicate a borken or disconnected wire.

The Wiper switch just completes the various wiper circuit ground connection to allow current to flow. With the ground connection open you should see voltage at the points mentioned above.

Before buying another wiper motor, I would spend the time to verify the circuits. If the circuit wiring is bad, even a new wiper motor will not work.

I have no idea why some the the aftermarket vendors list a "Wiper Relay" for the car. Perhaps they are unaware that the relays are internal to the wiper motor assembly for these models

Also, have you checked the fuse?????
