Hatch pull down motor problems

I am having a problem with my 91 GTA. Basically it seems that the motor has some broken leads in it. There is a plug that goes into the plastic motor, 3 wires I think. It was working sporadically, so to test it I plugged it into a spare motor that I have and the motor worked great up and down a couple times.

Do the leads in these motors break? Would it make the most sense to just buy the TDS deluxe rebuild kit? The whole unit is really floppy because the nylon (I think it is) tracks are pretty shot from the looks of it.

Thanks,
Douglas

The housings are notorious for cracking, the nylon track bushings will also stop it from working. Typically the motor itself is good.

I definately recommend TDS, I'm one of many, many happy returing customers. Plus they are a board sponsor. If you go to their site check it out, they have lots of unique, handy products.

If your motor is good, then you won't need the deluxe hatch repair kit. You can use the 204040 hatch repair kit. However, neither kit includes the wires that you say have broken. To replace that you'll need the 207180 striker-sensing switch. It contains all the wiring (including what you've broken) for the pull-down unit. Just swap your relay onto the new relay socket.

Lon,
I think the wiring broke inside the motor. When I hooked a spare motor to the wiring it worked just fine both up and down. I had to do some serious jiggling of the wiring to get the first motor to work sporadically.

Re: Hatch pull down motor problems

I doube it, unless the motor has been disassembled. There are only two terminals exposed on teh motor where the reversing switch mounts. If the reversing switch was removed from the motor one of the terminals on the switch may have bent over. However, back to the motor, if the silver cover has been removed from the end of the motor exposing the brushes, then by all means replace it.

How can you diagnose the switch? what do those three wires do? i believe their orange, white and black. I'd hate to throw money at the wrong parts.

Re: Hatch pull down motor problems

Remove the reversing switch from the motor. There is a single Phillips-head screw attaching it to the clear plastic motor housing. Turn the reversing switch upside down so the two terminals that attach to the motor are exposed. Use multimeter to test for continuity between the following terminals:

With the switch in the UP position (that meandsis flipped away from you or down) the right terminal has continuity to the orange wire that plugs into the switch. The Left terminal has continuity to the blue wire.

Flip the switch to the DOWN position (again, this means as if the pull-down has completed the down cycle, the switch will be up since it's upside down when testing) test for continuity between the Right terminal and blue wire. Test for continuity between the Left terminal and whilte wire.

While you've got the reversing switch off apply 12v positive and negative to those two terminals on the motor. Reverse polarity and the motor will run the opposite direction.
