cruise control switch old vs new type

I have an 83 Firebird SE and I have to replace the multifunction lever.
It has cruise control, pulse wiper. The Cruise control wiring has 3 wires. All the replacement switches chrome or black I can find have 4 wires. These appear to be for 84 - 92. Both 3 and 4 wire plugs physically fit into the connector at the base of the steering colomn. Are they electrically interchangable.

What I am asking is will a 84+ switch work in my 83? Dealer just says part is different for 82 and 83 than for 84-92. Wont comment on if it will actually work or not.
