Door sensor irritation

I have a 92 RS w/ cop (B4C) package ~ 147,000 miles.

I was cleaning the interior about two months ago (vacuuming, dusting, etc) and afterwards the interior lights would not turn off... at all. Had to remove the bulb from the dome and unplug the rear view mirror. Turns out the passenger door-open sensor is malfunctioning. Literally it worked that morning, didn't that afternoon.

Our audio/security guy says it is incorrectly grounded somehow, and we're trying to figure out why/where. He spent two hours trying to fix it, and couldn't.

Our plan is to trace the wiring and look for faulty wiring, screws puncturing, etc - even though nothing was done that day. I'll admit I know little about this, so anyone have any ideas before we tear the car apart? Don't want a could-be-quick-fix to take days.

We're also looking for wiring diagrams to make the job easier.
Any suggestions will be helpful!
Thanks guys

Re: Door sensor irritation

You can find a lot of wiring schematics on our local ATGO site.
The tech is right, the wiring is grounded somewhere. If you disconnect the switches and the lights are still on, it's probably in the wires.

Stupid question but did you check the headlight ****?

Hope this helps.

Re: Door sensor irritation

If you mean did we check to make sure the interior lights are turned off by rotating the **** (to the left... i think), yes we tried that... first.

I'll check the link you left. Thanks for the input.

Re: Door sensor irritation

I had to ask. I know it's a very stupid question but it's better to ask than to waste hours searching for the problem and then go "D'oh!"

It's not uncommon for the switches to go bad. You wouldn't believe how simple their construction is. You can remove the kick panels on both sides and just pull the plug on each switch. If it turns off the lights, it's the switch.

Otherwise you'd need to trace the white wire from the door switches and see if it's rubbing on something. With a 15y/o car, a short here and there is not unexpected.

You say you didn't do anything that day but even vacuuming could be enough to move the carpet a little and move some wires in turn and rub the last piece of insulation from the white wire somewhere under the dash.

If you have a good tech, he'll trace the white wire in no time.

Re: Door sensor irritation

Thanks for the info.

Something simple seems to be what causes 99% of the issues in my life! The **** was a fair question

I'll check the switch again, to make sure our security guy didn't just miss something... although he KNOWS what he's doing.

Guess we'll just trace the wires this weekend!
Thanks again

Re: Door sensor irritation

Here are a few diagrams to hepl you troublshoot you door switch porblem. These are from the 82 Camaro Service Manual, but I suspect that the wiring follows the same general routing in you car.

These are body diagrams showing the wiring harness routing. As Lou suggested above, you need to follow the WHITE wires from the switches.

I suggest you right click on the images below and "Save Link As" to your computer. Then open the file in some picture viewer software so you can rotate and zoom in to read or print them.

It is getting late, so I will look up and post the harness routing to the dome light tommrow evening.

Good luck finding your problem, hopefully one of the switches is bad.

Re: Door sensor irritation

Thanks Dave. The service manual we have isn't that detailed, but those diagrams should help guide us well enough.

The switch is the first thing I'm checking... for obvious reasons. However, if it were the switch I feel confident our security guy would have known.

Re: Door sensor irritation

Hope you find your problem without having to access and trace all the wiring

You can find the harness for the done light on the top center portion of the left shroud page I posted yesterday.

Also, here is the wiring diagram from the 82 Camaro service manual. I expect that your car is wired the same for these lights. Note that if you have courtsey lights in the hush panels under the driver's and passenger's side dashes that the WHITE wire (#156) could be grounded running to them also, or to the light switch in the dash.
