Hatch Motor Stuck In The Down Position, Help,,Help!!!!

Hi guys,, I have a 91 with the electric back hatch.. something really wierd happened.. I had the hatch up one day and had the battery out to charge it back up,, when I was hooking the battery back up I always hear clicking sounds around the firewall area, which I always assumed it was just relays clicking.. well as I was hooking the battery cables up I heard the electric hatch motor come on and it went down as if the hatch was being closed.. Well it has never came back up,, I have tried the truck key, pushing the dash release button, I can push the hatch down and it will catch but the motor will not bring the lock back up to pull down the hatch fully seating it.. I can push the dash button and unlock the hatch to open it back up, or use the key.. Someone mention maybe the relay burned out, and maybe I could hotwire the hatch motor from the battery to see if the motor is okay.. Please does anybody know how I can fix this problem or what causes it or whatever, Is there a way I can hotwire it, and how,???, which wires???... just please help me figure this out.... Thanks... Dale

Suggestions; With the hatch up, have you tried putting your finger into the pull down motor and depressing the release trigger? If that doesnt work you might try pulling the plastic panel for access to the motor, put pressure against the motor and try triggering the release again. Also might want to check to see if you're getting battery to the motor...

Good luck

The power to the pull-down unit is supplied by the red with white stripe wire that connects to the blue wire. Sorry you had to wait so long for the answer. I've tried to answer any and all questions such as this regarding getting the pull-down motor to work. You can also check the tech article I wrote on repairing the pull-down motors that has been posted on TGO since 2002.

Pay attention to lonsal, he knows what he is talking about. I had the same problem you have and I followed his directions and my problem was solved.

Thanks for the info lonsal... I read the tech info,, I can be really dense sometimes,, but,, unless I missed something here, the only tech info I found was to remove and repair the hatch motor & components.. I hope I don't have to remove/repair mine.. I was hoping for a fairly easy solution to the problem.. Also,, remarks like this quote {{{ " 'DJP87Z28' --- Everyone who has a Hatch pull down problem should read the TDS tech article before going BOO HOO my hatch will not work. " }}}} ..... does not make for a friendly atmosphere.. I signed up on this sight hoping to make friends and get some help and possibly help others.. Just from reading other post on here it is pretty obvious there are a lot of problems with these third gen cars, and it is not easy getting local help with these problems,, I have found that to be the case in the area where I live... The local GM garage guys don't seem to know much about these cars at all... I can't afford to throw hundreds of dollars at the problems I have just because these GM guys don't know much about the third gen cars.. I really appreciate any constructive help I can get... Thanks lonsal, I'll check to see if I have any power coming thru the wire you mentioned...

I guess you call the above Post intelligent when asking for help. My BOO HOO reply was for this dumb Post. You will note, I did give you a heads up on the TDS tech article. Also when the Hatch feature goes it is not a wire connection but a repair requiring new parts. That is unless you are so dumb you can not do a DIY job.
