I am just about finished with my 3.1L V6 To 5.7L V8 swap in a '91 RS. I installed an old style 350 with a vaccuum advanced and a coil-in-cap distributor. I only have a plug on there for the pos & neg to the coil. Problem is I have 2 plugs that were on the V6 harness. One was the pos & neg to the external coil and the other was a four wire plug to the pickup module on the distributor. If anyone could help me figure this out, I would appreciate it, thanks.

 

the four wire plug you no longer need, ignore it, it goes to the computer,

you need a ignition switchcontrolled hot wire for the BATT spade on the HEI cap and you need your tach wire for the TACH spade on the cap,

and thats all- very simple

figure out which is which on the v-6 harness

spade crimp connectors fit the spades in the cap, or you can salvage the plug ends from a parts car or truck from 75-86

any left over wires tape the ends up or remove the computer and entire passenger side harness if you dont have lockup converter

I found the wires and hooked them up. I am now not getting any spark when I turn it over. I re-checked all my grounds, all the grounds that connect to the bellhousing are on, I have a battery to engine ground, and an engine to chassis ground.

I tested them all and i get the complete circuit beep from my meter. When I check the power and ground wires that go into the cap, I get a complete circuit, but when I turn the ignition on or when I crank it, I loose the complete circuit.

What else can I check or what am I missing? I know its only something stupid, I hope someone knows.

 

I know this is an old thread I just hope someone looks, could a v6 distributor with a v8 cap make your tach read wrong? Mines off horribly and the guy I bought it from said he replaced the distributor, is there a way to tell wich one I have?
