alternator stud problems...?

I bought a serpentine setup off an 89 iroc. Put it on my 86 c10.
The problem I am having is the alternator that I got with the serpentine setup does not have a regular "stud" on the back, it has that ?"rectangle" protrusion with a threaded hole to attach alt output wire. This is causing me some clearance issues with valve covers. Can someone offer a recommendation for this? Will that "protrusion" of a stud come out and allow me to put in a stud that does not stick out so far? Or is there an alternative alternator to alleviate this issue?
thx for any help.

PS, right now I had to loosen the alt in order to get the boot on, but it is sandwiched between alt. output and valve covers. There "might" be 1/8" clearance, and that is with grinding the end a little.
Only a matter of time before the rubber boot gives in. Luckily I don't drive it right now and it is just sitting.

If you are willing, you can try to clock the back half of the alternator to give better clearance if the wires will reach......Just a thought.

Re: alternator stud problems...?

sounds like an idea, although I have never attempted that. Is it hard to do, do I need anything other than hand tools?
thx

No special tools necessary. I think just an 8mm closed-end wrench (if I'm not mistaken). Remove the three bolts on the casing and twist the two halves to align the bolt holes again. You have three ways to line up the holes.

Hope this helps.

Re: alternator stud problems...?

not gonna work. Bolt hole for brace, just looked.
Anyone got any idea? I would consider buying a new alt if the stud was different/located "higher"...
Recommendations?

Re: alternator stud problems...?

ditch the brace, tighten the nut hand tight onto the stud and grind rest of the stud off. i have edelbrock elite tall valve covers with that serpentine set up no clearence problems now.
