140 Gauge Cluster Wiring Diagrams & Year Differences?

I have a 140 speedo gauge cluster (T/A) and I am wanting to install it in my '85. Wiring doesn't bother me a bit. The gauge cluster doesn't have any VSS box on the back, and since I bought it several years ago off a forum member here, I don't know what year it is. I did a search for 140 wiring diagrams, but didn't really find any answers. Is there a wiring difference with the various years of 140 clusters, or are they all the same?

Anybody? If someone could even post up '87-'92 wiring diagrams from GM service manuals, I would take the time to figure out if there are any differences or not.

Ok, '87 & '88 are slightly different. In case someone else comes along, I'll go ahead and post my research. Comparing the '87 to the '88, the '87 has choke warning indicator (V8 Vin H; C1 pin 4, .8 Lt. blue - to choke heater) otherwise everything else is the same (SES indicator has minor wiring color differences).

1987 Gages Cluster:
C1 (bottom):
1 - Tachometer Sender (.35 White)
2 - Ground (.8 Black)
3 - Illumination (.5 Gray)
4 - Choke Warning Indicator (.8 Light Blue)
5 - Temperature Gage Sender (.35 Dark Green)
6 - Not Used
7 - Open
8 - Oil Pressure Gage Sender (.5 Tan)
9 - Ignition (.35 Pink/Black)
10 - Not Used
11 - Not Used
12 - Ground (.8 Black)
13 - Fasten Belts (.35 Yellow)
14 - Speedometer (.8 Light Green/Black)

C2 (top):
1 - BRAKE Warning Indicator (.35 Tan/White)
2 - Ground (.8 Black)
3 - Illumination (.35 Gray)
4 - Open (.5 Brown, VSS, not used)
5 - Open (.8 Black/White, Ground, not used)
6 - Open (.35 Pink/Black, Gages Fuse, not used)
7 - LH Turn Indicator (.8 Light Blue)
8 - Hi Beam Indicator (.8 Light Green)
9 - RH Turn Indicator (.8 Dark Blue)
10 - Fuel Gage Sender (.5 Pink)
11 - Not Used
12 - 470Ohm Resistor to Generator (.8 Brown)
13 - SERVICE ENGINE SOON Indicator (.8 Yellow for VIN H; .5 Brown/White for VIN S, VIN F, VIN 8)
14 - SHIFT Indicator (.5 Tan/Black)

Re: 140 Gauge Cluster Wiring Diagrams & Year Differences?

Hi I have a 1985 T/A with 85Mph Speedo and i also have a parts 1989 GTA with a 140Mph Speedo the GTA Gage is better looking and want to do a swap but the last time I tried it did,t work the first problem was that the speedo on 85 has the rotary cable from the trany directly to de gage the GTA is electric. the second problem is the cables for the other gages must be of diferent order because they did't work can you hepl?

You have to re-pin your 85 connectors to match the colors/locations of the wires listed above. I just did this on my 85. You will also need to use the yellow vss box that is attached to the donor cars ecm to make the speedo work. Get the vss sensor for the tranny as well. Then you can completly remove that speedo cable.

Re: 140 Gauge Cluster Wiring Diagrams & Year Differences?

Wait a minute. So if I have a 85 cluster set and want to put it into my 87 does this mean I have to start re-pinning things? My car is an 87 V6 with mechanical speedo which is why I went with the 85 because it has a mechanical speedo as well.

yes. The wires are in different locations on the connector.

Great I was hoping it would be a direct swap. Does anyone know how I'd have to re-pin to go from 87 to 85.
