power windows suck(at least mine do)

The issue is my power windows wont go down, I checked my fuses and there all good. I doubt that its the motors because they went out at the same time. Same with the switches, i doubt its them for the same reason. I dont know if this is related but my power locks dont work either, if any one has any ideas or had this problem and could give me some help. ill be working on this this weekend, thanks a lot. (

might be as easy as checking the fuses in your fuse box

Re: power windows suck(at least mine do)

Well, he said in the first line that he already checked the fuses and they are fine.

I can relate: My power hatch and my passenger side window stopped working at the same time. I checked the fuses and they are fine, and my driver's side window works just fine. The car sat for about three years, so I'm sorta starting to think that a mouse ate the wiring. Or 3rd Gens just have record-setting electrical gremlins.

I'm seriously considering retrofitting manual windows.

Re: power windows suck(at least mine do)

Ya, i guessing that its a wiring/electrical mess.(thanks for the reply ill be tearing the inside apart this weekend and taking a gander inside my center console(the mounted switches/wiring) Luckily, my next door neighbor is a mechanic so hes going to help me out. But like i said, if any one has experienced this problem before or has any ideas and doesn't mind sharing it would be vastly apreicated, as im sure that others have had/are experiencing this problem. As always thanks to everyone at thirdgen.org (sorry it got a bit lengthy)

Good luck with that! I'm gonna do the same thing next day that I have off, probably on Friday.

If you have to replace the motor, this may help:

And I believe there is a checklist of possible things in the doors that could go wrong in the "Body" section of this forum.

Re: power windows suck(at least mine do)

YES!! Success! It was just 3 plugs that weren't hooked up. Amazing how something so simple could require so much work. the power lock plugs are kinda under the fuse box, you have to remove a trim panel an the far left hand bottom side right after the door hinge, theres a box type thing that that the harnesses plug into, as for the windows, theres a big pink wire coming off the back of your fuse box (at lest for 88, but im sure it most 3rd gens) That wire is pluged into a side panel thing with slots to plug stuff in. Sorry my descriptions are terrible, but I did by best ok, lol. One thing that i can see happening with the pw is that box that the harness is plugged into is grounded by a tiny screw, and it that comes off it will make them stop working( at least as far as i can tell.) If any one needs pics of what im rambling about just request them and i can put them up here. thanks

Re: power windows suck(at least mine do)

Its real funny how you guys are better engineers then the guys who designed these cars. In the 25 years that I have had my 82 Firebird, I have replaced the Driver side window left motor and the two rocker switches on the console. The power window wiring, connectors, etc are all orginal to the car. I suspect that if you are having problems with your electical systems, then most likely you have a flood car. My car has never been flooded, driven through water, etc and has never had any electical problems in 25 years that was a manufactoring defect.

If you look under my dash, the wiring still looks new!

Re: power windows suck(at least mine do)

I have a 89 Trans am and I have had it just over a year..... rebuilt some things since as it was dead when I found it.... I love having everything working as it should.... power windows have never been a problem.... I love my power windows and locks... soon to put 4th gen power seats in and console will be next... I like the looks but the dash is way too much work for me and I like the looks of the original dash.... but I blab on anyway.... glad to hear you fixed it!!! satisfying isnt it???
