3 Wire Alt
Ok just got finished a couplea weeks ago rewiring my car from scratch. Using a 3 wire alt but like a 1 wire. The 2 wires coming from the connector on the alt are just being connected to the back of the alt where the 1 big wire that charges the battery goes.
Now it's charging just fine and what not, and if i remember correctly this is exactly how i had it wired before...however now something is draining my battery. Sitting for 2 days and now it's down to 5 volts n some change. So my question is, will having the Alt wired like that drain my battery when the car is off? If so how can i re wire it (simple "race" car). If not...i guess it's time to start fishing...how do i go about checking what's draining my battery?

Re: 3 Wire Alt
My alternator is a 3-wire but only uses two. It has constant power on the red/black wire and puts out ign power on the brown/white wire. The black wire in the middle is cut. It charges fine and the battery holds charge. Not sure if it's your problem but try charging the batt and unplugging the alternator and let it sit.

Re: 3 Wire Alt
i don't have a black wire...i thought the big gauge wire that charges the battery counts as a wire as well...anyways, yea i thought of that as well...there's gotta be a better way of finding out tho.

check your alternator housing for voltage.... perhaps there is a small short inside the alternator? Also... are you sure there aren't any lights staying on.... I've had similar problems where maybe the hood light will be staying on or the brake lights.

Re: 3 Wire Alt
okay figured it out, like i guessed the alt was the problem. The white wire NEEDS to be ignition on only. Can't have both wires right right to the back of the alt. I could even hear it buzzing if i stuck my ear real close. So, thanks for the help
