92 electronic speedo
My question is this, Can I replace my cluster w/ mech speedo to a newer style cluster from a 91-92 w/ elec. without a ECM, I plan on going carbed soon with a different motor an all.

Re: 92 electronic speedo
I've been researching this one myself, in a way. I have an 89 IROC and plan to change over to an Autometer gauge setup. First I wanted to change from the factory cable driven setup to the 90-92 factory electric setup. This would be easy to wire up, just change the sending unit at the tranny. After contacting Autometer they directed me to www.speedometersolutions.com.
After talking to a rep there I was told that I could use the speedo and it would work fine, but since the 89 and 90+ setup was different I may have a problem with torque converter lockup. Apparently the computer needs a signal from the Vehicle Speed Sensor. On the 89 the VSS is on the back of the cluster. I'm not sure how it works on the 90+. It may go from the tranny sending unit to the ECU then the ECU controls the Speedo.
I was told that if I got the electric speedo for my 89 I would need to buy a module to make sure my ECU got the needed info.
Also, the 89 sends a 2 pulse signal to the ECU and the 90+ sends a 4 pulse signal to the ECU. You may want to contact that website for more details.
If you switch to carb, I'm not sure how that would effect your torque converter. I would assume as long as you had the 90+ electric sending unit you could run it no problem.
Here are the post I've made.

Re: 92 electronic speedo
Thanks that was very helpful information, as far as my tranny is concerned it will be a non lock up type, besides B&M makes a kit for the lock up converters
Re: 92 electronic speedo
the 90 and up camaros use a 4k pulse VSS. the signal from the VSS goes to what's called a 4 output buffer box under the dash. the output box takes the 4k input from the VSS and transfers it to signals that go to the cruise control., ECM, speedometer, and the ALDL port. as for changing to a 90 and up cluster as long as you get the speed sender for a 90 up and do the wiring there is no reason why it shouldn;t work. they do sell a lockup controller to take care of that if you need to.
