Distributor Adjustment TPI

Me and a buddy were checking my timing the other day and found, much to my dismay, that it was advanced about 25*. Shouldn't be all that big of deal, loosen up the 9/16" bolt and dial it in. Well, with the TPI setup, there's all kinds of 'stuff' in the way. Any ideas about how to loosen the bolt up? Any specialized tools needed? Also, I'm assuming the stock 0* is the best timing?

Last time i checked 6 degrees initial.. disconnect the single wire on the passenger side rear near the firewall/ A/C, I believe the wire is brown.

Ok, so disconnect the wire to allow easier access and then set my timing to 6* advance?

Disconnecting the wire cuts the ECM off from controlling the timing. Its a brown wire right up above the heater box, has a weatherpack connector. Unplug it, loosen dist bolt (craftsman makes a "Distributor Wrench" which has a nice offset to reach it easy) then set your timing to 6* advance. Plug brown wire back in, then disconnect battery to clear the trouble code.

Great, thanks a lot for the info! I'm going to go see what I can do to get that done. Thanks again!

Re: Distributor Adjustment TPI

When the bypass wire is unplugged, should the ignition module still advance?

I get 4 degrees at idle, if I give it just a HAIR of throttle, like, 100 RPMs up, I get 6 degrees; if I put it at like 2k I get 12 degrees. Is this weird?

My chain also must be worn because the timing mark bounces about a degree or two back and fourth between revolutions.

Re: Distributor Adjustment TPI

There's a small amount of advance built into the module, so that doesn't sound too unusual. The end-play in the distributor usually allows for a few degrees of variability in timing, you can disassemble the distributor and shim it down to reduce it.

Re: Distributor Adjustment TPI

Thank You,

I noticed quite a bit of free play in the distributor, but I figured that more or less it would be taken up when in motion.
