how do I know if the relay center is complete?

I just bought this car and it has had its share of problems, right now I've narowed down the problems to just a few, its a 91 camaro rs and the horn, turn signals and tach does not work. everything else I've messed with didnt have anything to do with those items. I've looked in the relay center and only have one aluminum round clicker for the hazards and a white box that hasnt done anything for me to tell what it is. any ideas would be helpful.

Look in this thread for a diagram of the Convinence Center. It also has the wiring diragram for the horn circuit.

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/atta...-horn_001m.jpg

The white box is the Audio Alarm Assembly.....buzzes when you leave the key in the iginition and open the door, leave the headlights on and open the door, etc.

The only realy you may not have in the above link is the choke heater relay. You will only have this realy if you have a carb with a choke heater. The trun signal flasher is mounted in the "C" clamp above the convinence center.

Hope this helps some with getting everything functional in your new car.

Welcom to the boards....

Re: how do I know if the relay center is complete?

Thanks dave, I found the two wires with a connector for a relay, by luck it was the turn signal blinker. however, that diagram doesnt look anything like whats under my dash, lol, theres alot of new stuff, maybe it has been wrecked and salvaged or something,I'm not sure. I didnt see anything that looked like the convenience center for my horn. can you tell me what color are the two horn switch wires are so I can by pass the relay and run them directly to a power source and horn? or is that not a good idea? any ideas on the tach? thanks again Dave

Re: how do I know if the relay center is complete?

Take a look at the wiring diagram on the left of the scan for the convinence center. It is the wiring diagram for the horn circuit.

The horn switch is supposted to be black from the horn relay in the convinence center to the switch on the steering column. The switch on the steering column grounds the circuit and enegrizes the horn realy, which closes a contact to power the horn.

The horn switch in the steering column is not rated to carry the current the horn draws so it is not a good idea to bypass it. It also is not set up to power the horn.

Since I have no idea what you have in place of the convinence center, I am not sure what to tell you about powering the horn. You will probably need to mount a realy somewhere and power one side of the coil from the CTSY fuse (courtsey). The other side of the coil will need to be connected to the black wire to the horn switch.

The orange wire will also need to be conned to a NO (normally opened contact) on the realy. The other side of this contact will be connected to the green wire that goes out the firewall through connector C100 and then to the horn(s) in the left fender, just behind the left side head lights and just above the left front side marker.

You could also visit a junkyard and try to salvage a convinence center and install it in your car. Or look in the For Sale and Parts Wanted boards here on thirdgen.org

My car is an 82 and the scan I posted of the convinence center is from the 82 Camaro Shop Manual. Based on a number of other threads on the convinence center in the Electronics board, I am not aware of the convinence center design changing over the 10 year production run of the third gens. However I could be incorrect in assuming the convinence center remained the same fot the ten year run.
