whats this wire
There is an orange wire on the passenger side of my car that leads down by the battery and stops. What is it? it's in a loom all by itself.

Re: whats this wire
Power for the ECM. Should hook to a pigtail coming off of the positive battery cable.

Re: whats this wire
Ok, thank you and pleas bear with me i have a few more wires for you to track down for me if you would please. I just got this car and it has wires everywhere.
My next question is what is the three wire connector in the same loom as my O2 sensor wire that stops halfway across the manifold in front of the carb?

Re: whats this wire
Sounds like throttle position sensor. Front left of the carb.
Also sounds like somebody's been hacking on your car.

Re: whats this wire
No idle air control on a carb.
There are 2 connectors that go to the AIR diverter valve; 2 wires in each of them.
Look at the way your wiring is built. If it hasn't been hacked on 2 bad, there are 5 COMPLETELY TOTALLY ALTOGETHER separate and discrete harnesses under your hood. They were each installed as part of some subsystem of the vehicle, according to what equipment options it has, as it rolled down the production line.
1 - The body one; comes from ½ of the bulkhead connector below the brake booster, and goes to the headlights and such.
2 - The engine one; comes from the other ½ of the bulkhead, and goes to the engine-related things that are NOT connected with the computer. Ignition, gauges, alternator, starter, electric choke, battery feed to the pass compartment, etc.
3 - The computer one; comes from the pass side fender well near the blower motor, and goes to all of the computer stuff. Sensors, solenoids, and all of that; everything that's either used by or controlled by the ECM.
4 - The HVAC one; comes through the firewall near the heater hoses, has wires and vacuum lines concerned with the HVAC.
5 - The cruise one; comes through the firewall near the steering column.
You can tell ALOT about what the wires do by just paying attention to which harness they're in.

Re: whats this wire
Ok, well that only leaves me with 3 plugs. My car has no ac ampressor, or smog pump. it had the air hookup, but all that's left now is some hose, lots of crimped off lines in the exhaust, and a wierd diaphragm of some sort in the passenger exhaust pipe with a vacuum hose running off of it.
Of the three that are left, they are all 2 wire connectors, 2 are black, one is grey. They all come out of their loom at the front of the passenger valve cover. Which ones go to the air diverter valve, and what is the last one? Thank you guys so much again, you don't know how much you are helping me.

Re: whats this wire
my LG-4 has a grey and a black plug going to the air injection diverter valve. the other one could possibly be for the ecm's coolant temp sensor.

Re: whats this wire
Mixture control solenoid is at the front right of the carb.
Go to Vato Zone and get yourself the Chilton's mini-manual for these cars. It has all this in it. No point in pestering us to death one wire at a time.

Re: whats this wire
Ok, i think i got it figured out now. The grey and black plugs that are next to each other went to my air diverter valve, which is no longer on the car. I have the coolant sensor plugged in, so that means the one i have left is the mixture control solenoid. Sweet.. thanks forum! By the way, i thought the whole point of a message board is to help people. Sorry if i'm pestering you, but don't flame me just cause i came to you for help. I also don't appreciate the Vato Zone comment, i am mexican.

Re: whats this wire
I'm not flaming you. It's just super irritating for those of us who DID spend the money to know what we're doing, to have people try to come along and get what we paid for out of us FOR FREE, while being annoying about it with attitude.
Helping out is one thing; getting leeched off of is something TOTALLY else.
Glad to hear you're Mexican. I'm Colombian.

Re: whats this wire
It doesn't cost a thing for you to go look under your hood and help me hook up my engine correctly. I'm new to third gens, yes, so why is it so hard to understand that i don't know a lot about them? And why is it wrong to ask what i don't know in a freakin forum about them? If i cant ask questions about my car, then this forum is pointless.

So help me understand why I should go spend MY money and use it to help YOU?
If you're new to these cars, then here's what you need. Not to jump on the backs and ride the rest of us who DID spend our money so we WOULD know what we're doing.
Like I said, helping out with a wire here or a wire there is cool; but trying to re-wire your whole car off of SOMEBODY ELSE'S GENEROSITY, and then getting your panties all in a wad because somebody who's BEEN HELPING you has got tired of a "free rider", isn't a real good way to make new friends.

Re: whats this wire
How are you spending money? i don't know what you mean? I never got upset, i kept thanking you for helping me, and i still appreciate it, but you know what forget it. I don't want to start off on the wrong foot in this forum because of some stupid misunderstanding.
Hi, sofakingdom, I want to thank you for your help. I'mk new to third gens and i am hoping someone such as yourself who knows alittle more about these cars than me is willing to help when they can. I will do the same. I extend my hand in friendship.

Re: whats this wire
Only $21.45 plus shipping on-line; maybe more or less in the stores, I couldn't say.
I have that one, plus the OEM manual for my car www.helminc.com (not cheep). Both of them for 20 years or more. THAT'S how I know where the wires go.
