Re: steering column/vats problem

it could have something to dow tih vats, but if you got a new steering coulumn, and wired everything the same, nd use the same key, it should work. im having almost the same problem with my car, it cranks but wont fire after the steering column was replaced. let me knwo if u solve ur problem, ill let u know if i find anything out.
----------
also, on my lock/cylinder on my 87, the key thingy sticks out a little and the car wont crank, but i can push it in, toward the steering column, and it will crank, now that would be an easy fix.

Re: steering column/vats problem

right, but the vats system isnt actualy in the steering column, its just wired through it. if u use ur old key it should work. just make sure you dont have any loose wires, also you could try to reset ur computer. check the inj fuses. make sure ur fuel pump is priming. all of my lights come on, turn signals work, and kmy car wont start either, but mine cranks. im so lost.

Re: steering column/vats problem

if your not using you orginal key the car wont crank if you using the key that came with the column the resistance is different you need to take your orginal key and the new key to the dealer and have the dealer cut you a new key that matchs the resistance from the orignal or just do a vats bypass which would be cheaper

Re: steering column/vats problem

take a ohm meter test resistance on your orginal key how ever much it reads say for example 7800ohms go to radio shack buy some resistors that adds up tp 7800 ohms put them together test with ohm meter to make sure they make 7800ohms go to the bootom of the column find the orange strand of wires disconnect and reconnect with the resistors .

the answer to your problem is very simple.Take the ign. lock/switch out of your original column and replace it with the key tumbler in the junkyard purchase. The keys are different.I promise you,if you only replaced the steering column with one from a different car thats all you need to do.The answer is in the ign. key! That little black piece on the key is part of the vats. The key sends a signal to the vats module. As long as you have the vats module and ign. key from the same car (not just same year) you should have no problems.

Re: steering column/vats problem

If you don't have the key, you'll need to find the right key resistance. I think they have 15 different values total. It only takes some time and a few resistors. http://tpiparts.net/vehicle_anti_theft_system__vats_

Re: steering column/vats problem

The best way to test if the key is even the prob with out doing a lot of work is it just get the old colm with the old key place it in the floor under the dash, then plug in the orange wire from you 1st colm into the plug under the dash.
If the car starts then you know the key resentence for the 2nd colm is different. Then you can go throw the trouble of
1. switching the 1st key cylinder into the 2nd colm,
2. get a key made for the 2nd colm with the resentence of the 1st colm,
3. do the by pass with the resentence from radio shack (1st colm resentence)

But if there is no crank with the 2nd colm at all then the vats might not even be the prob, that is why you should just plug in the old colm to test don't forget to turn the 2nd colm key to the on position when testing. this will power up everything. i hope this helps and is not reparative of past posts.

PS most of the time when the colm is loose it just need the 4 screws tightened, they loosing up from people getting in and out of the car using the wheel to help them get out.

If you need a new bypass with the key and box i have one for sale just e mail me at gtafanatic88@hotmail.com
