Electrical Wiring Novice here!!

Heeellllpppp!

My driver side signal marker is giving me problems. With the headlights turned off the side marker will light up when the left signal is activated, the passenger side marker works fine. With the headlights on the marker will not light up or do anything else, doesn't matter if the signal is activated or not, nothing.

This is what I've tried so far, checked the fuse, it was fine , replaced the bulb twice, did not help. I replaced the bulb receptacle still nothing. I picked up one of those cheap circuit testers, the ones where if the wire is hot a light comes on in the tester and then I checked the wires running to the receptacle, the blue wire which I believe is the signal wire is hot and the brown which I believe is the parking light is cold with the headlights off, the bulb lights up, but will not flash. With the headlights on the blue wire is hot and the brown wire is hot but the bulb goes out.

Oh yeah, the front marker and the rear signal light come on whether the headlights are on or off, but do not flash. The passenger side markers work like they should.

Anyone know what this could be, any suggestions are greatly appreciated, Thanks!!

Re: Electrical Wiring Novice here!!

Have you checked both bulbs on the left side?
Have you checked the flasher under the dash?
Thats all I can think of being wrong at the moment, unless you have recently done any wiring on the car.

If you mean have I tried using the right side marker bulb on the left side then yes, it did not change anything.

I'm not sure what you mean by flasher under the dash, and if it is the flasher under the dash your talking about would it affect both left and right marker or do they have seperate ones per side?

Haven't done any wiring, this problem just started out of nowhere.

Any one of the lights on that side (side marker, park/front turn signal, rear turn signal) being burned out can cause your symptoms. Also, the flasher module under the dash can, unlikely as it seems, also cause this.

ok,since you have tried a different bulb on front & rear, that cancels my blown bulb thought. Check the light sockets for corrosion. If the metal contacts in the socket have white or green gunk on them, you need to clean them with a wire brush or sandpaper and apply some dielectric grease before installing the bulbs.
There are 2 flashers under the dash on a 1990 camaro, I can't remember which one does what, but I think one controls the turnsignals and the other is for the hazard flashers.
Since you haven't done any wiring, turn the hazards on and walk around the car to see whats working or isn't.

I have turned on all the lights, the only other one that is out is the license plate light, but it's on the passenger side and not the drivers side where the problem is. Where under the dash is the flasher module and what does it look like.

I also thought the socket might be the problem so I picked up a new one and spliced it in, still didn't work. I turned all the lights on and the only one that was not was the license plate light on the passenger side, the problem light is on the drivers side. My camaro is a 92, but I would think the flashers under the dash would be in the same place, where under the dash and what do they look like?

Thanks for the help everyone!!

Re: Electrical Wiring Novice here!!

I turned all the lights on earlier, and they all came on except the side marker. I just went out and tried the hazard lights and the front drivers side marker did not come on like it did when i just pulled the headlight ****, could that be the cause of the problem. Is that a sign that the bulb in the front marker is bad as well since it comes on with headlights but not with the hazards or is that a sign of another problem somewhere else?

Thanks again for the help!!

Your front park/turn signal light has 2filaments, as does the rear turn signal. The filament that is on the blinker circuit can be burned out and the normal light will work fine. You need to remove the bulbs and check them out and/or replace them.

I will pick some up tommorow to late and wet outside tonight, thanks for everything. To think I followed the wires all over that car and it could just be a couple bulbs, lol.

Thanks for everything, you and Timmy have been a great help, I'll let you know if the bulbs fix the problem, Thanks again!!

Re: Electrical Wiring Novice here!!

BTW, the bulbs you are looking for are p/n 2057 and the side marker is a 194.

If it happens to be the flasher module, there are 2 of them under the dash, one for the blinkers which is, I believe, in a bracket mounted to the steering column support, the other for the hazards is to the right, by the center console - they are the same part number.

Re: Electrical Wiring Novice here!!

Yeah, I traced the wires back to the firewall, spliced in new receptacles, changed bulbs in the side markers twice, and after all that, its the front marker bulb that went bad and caused all the headache.

Live and learn, lol.
