Re: no power!!!

check all fusible links, i believe there are 3 or 4 right by your starter underneath the passenger side, about 3-4 inches from the starter stud, can't miss the little tubular things, need to test for voltage before AND after the tube to make sure it's getting voltage before and after to rule that one good or bad. There is also one more right by the battery. Do the same. Other's will tell you that you will be able to physically tell if it's bad if it's either melted or you smelled something melt, but mine was not melted, not even affected, and it was bad, the wire melted inside the insulation and showed no physical signs, but i had checked before and after, and i wasnt' getting voltage before OR after, so i knew that one was bad. Fixed all my probs.

Re: no power!!!

it doesn't need to have the fusible link to run right persay...but if you were to have an electrical surge...your alternator goes haywire and sends 18V through your car or more...then every piece of electronics from your guages to your dome light are screwed. Yes the fuses are there as an added protection, but there was a reason why GM and every car manufacturer uses fusible links, they just changed the form of them over the years (now they are a little square plastic cartridge). I believe it also protects your engines electrical, like all the sensors and electronics on your carb. It's more or less a safety device for your electronics, it's just back in the 80s they didn't make it as easy to replace as newer cars today. I don't know what stores you got around you, but advance auto parts up here has em for GM, for like $3 i think. small price to pay to save your electronics at a later day, ya know? On the contrary i have heard of people putting in things like MAXI fuses, those huge blade fuses, but then again you got a waterproofing issue. Would you rather have the easyness or replacement that you need to spend 10 minutes to waterproof or the fusible links that you cut, crimp, cut crimp and your done. It's all to your preference.

Re: no power!!!

does anyone have a pic of how there fusible links and wires look.all i can find is two wires to my starter and no fusible links.i have 3 black wires by the carb on the passenger side that been cut off and taped(i post pic)also have wire by the battery that looks like it might have went to a electric cooling fan(ill post pic of it to).my mechanic told me the links were bad but i cant find any since ive had time to work on car again.i think he was just trying to get the money out of me.
